Congress votes to ban Confederate flags from VA cemeteries

Congress passed a proposal on Thursday that essentially bans Confederate flags from national cemeteries. With a 265-159 vote, the proposal makes it illegal to display the Confederate flag in Department of Veteran Affairs cemeteries – even on individual grave sites that honor soldiers who fought for the Confederacy, except on Memorial Day and Confederate Memorial Day.

Introduced by Rep. Jared Huffman (D) of California, the proposal received support from 84 Republicans and all but two Democrats. Rep. Sanford Bishop (D) of Georgia, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, voted against the amendment, while Representative Betty McCollum (D) of Minnesota voted "present."

Huffman's proposal was added as an amendment to the Veteran Affairs spending bill, and it remains uncertain whether it will become law....

Rep. Huffman was "disappointed" that her proposal, though supported by a majority of the House, did not receive more support.

Ryan-o, despite the opposition to this disgrace by a majority of the Republican Caucus, allowed a vote to satisfy the Demonrat radicals. Next time, attach a rider as to something that Ryan-o and his despicable fellow prostitutes consider REALLY IMPORTANT like denying funding to Chamber of Crony Commerce legislative schemes. Then the Demonrats can decide whether they will vote to show that they too wear kneepads for the corrupt Chamber of Commerce despite all their faux "populist" rhetoric claiming to support the "little guy" against the big corporate bosses while having their hands out for the tribute paid to them too by the bosses.

The Demonrats are verrrrrrry angry at the continued Republican voting record of much of the South. This is a classic case of the Demonrat left shouting at all wings of the GOP: Let's you and him fight! It is a clever strategy given the brainlessness and spinelessness of the GOP-E who NEVER respond in kind.

As Bill Buckley wrote: Politics is the jewelers' art. The value of a stone depends on how it is cut. The Demonrats are constantly cutting our stones against us and our "leaders" cower in the corner hoping that the baaaaaaaad Demonrats will just go away and leave the GOP to coddling BIG BUSINESS as usual. Muffie wants/needs more billions in her trust fund and neither the Demonrats nor the GOP base seem to care about the care and feeding of poor Muffie's billions at all unless she donates to the Demonrats in which case they will care.

All that the peasants care about is dull, boring or embarrassing priorities like jobs, borders, babies, marriage, family, guns, THEIR culture, nationalism, restricting trade, cutting THEIR tax burdens. Stuff like that.

Ryan-o may well get his just desserts in the August primary as Cantor did a couple of years ago. There will still be plenty of unprincipled elitist trash to eagerly seek his "leadership" position. Fortunately, there IS The Donald.

Believe me, we’ll be hearing about the Civil War (even if it is limited to the relation to slavery) for the next 100,000 years. Since slavery is key to the reparations nonsense, and blacks pushing it today are basically throwing up their hands in terms of ever assimilating economically in this country, we’ll hear about this until the end of time.

No accident that during an election year we’re having a “Roots” re-make and any small news story concerning the Confederacy makes national headlines; even the amplification of Black Lies Matter is just to keep the blacks from straying from the Dem column...

He is one of two black congressmen representing a predominantly rural district, old enough to have some respect for others, may have some principles, and likely figures it will sell to swing voters in his district.

The flag these men saluted and marched behind was of the USA.

Not CSA.

So many have died in defense of that flag that I'm inclined to ban the CSA flag from VA cemeteries too.

But not for the same reason as others want to ban it.

Aren't there CSA cemeteries in the South?

I even support honoring Soviet and German and Japanese soldiers from any era...in their own cemetery.

In mixed cemeteries they should be able to display their own flag.

sanford’s District includes Ft Benning. Besides blacks and stock dems, he has a history of being pro-military, and his district is hardly all black. It is Most of Colmbua plus a lot of southern rural agri land in Georgia. He’s making the smart political play. He’s also old, and may have residual values.

Seems like a violation of the 1st amendment.

Southern conservatives were fools to think that Republicans would fight to preserve our Southern Heritage.

I think the Constitution forbids this.

But in Obamaland, who knows? :)

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, not prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

Part of the idea of welcoming the south back in, and kudos to Grant for doing so, was recognizing that southerners were our countrymen again without trying to force them to forget or deny that for which they mourned. If, as the practice indicates, part of this reconciliation involved planting CSA veterans in VA cemeteries, then let the reconciliation extend to allowing the flag for which they fought to fly over their graves. The north is doing less to reconcile the situation than any time since about 1875.

These lowlife, career politicians have gone too far with this. It’s time they all be forced to get real jobs. Maybe a 15 buck an hour hamburger flipper job would be more appropriate for these retards.

If that is the case, then this is a swipe at the likes of Pt. Lookout here in MD. I was surprised to find it is under the auspices of the Baltimore Nat’l Cem near me, as if it was indeed a VA cem. It is a mass grave of prisoners and it has a monument and flagpoles.

I can appreciate the other general implications, but if it IS a CSA site, then there should be no reason not to allow that. Otherwise, it makes sense to drop CS cems from the VA system.

Funny, down the street from Balto Natl is (besides an older version of itself) a CSA ground within wonderful Loudon Park. No fed connection, but has been well taken care of by SCV and the cem.

The Confederate flag is a treason. Brave men, including ancestors of mine fought to put that flag in the ground. Should be be proud of men who’s intention was to divide the nation half slave and half free? I don’t think so.

Such a grasp of the subtleties and complexities of history, the motivations of men, and the system of checks and balances engineered by Madison.

A republic . . . if you can keep it.
