Air Travel: If a private company wasted billions of taxpayer dollars, hired workers who failed to do their job 95% of the time, and then forced people to wait in line for hours, how long do you think theyd be in business? So why is the TSA being treated any differently?

I think it’s a “thumb in the eye” from Barry, as a going away present. Kinda like what he did with the parks and memorials when there was a partial de-funding.
I believe that the TSA not longer supplies junk inspectors at any airport in Mont.
If private firms did the screening, then they would be essentially running a concession at the airport. The airport could hold them to specific criteria if they wished to receive their full compensation and/or have their concession license renewed.
I see no downside in kicking out the TSA.
This ignores the fact that the whole crisis is being staged so that private companies with political connections can take over.
Yes they will - the airlines do everyday. Let them screen their own passengers - it is their risk - and their customers. They would never let it devolve into this mess!
Bush’ fault, litrally.
Another FReeper, and experienced traveler, posited that this is an effort to drive travelers to the TSA Pre-clear at $85 per sign-up. That could well be.
Personally, I know I slow things down because I won’t go through the milliwave scanner. I haven’t noticed many others turn down the free roasting, but maybe that’s changing.
And unions want more employees = more members = more dues = more political clout
Exactly
The airlines were thrilled to give up the screening and possible liability.
I’m heading to Atlanta (Hartsfield) tomorrow for a meeting (one of my least favorite towns).
Will report along the way.
My understanding it was at all airports in Chicago, and most definitely TSA related. Its not weather related, its not a holiday period, or anything to do with the airlines, although they are very upset by the TSA delays, because it screws up the airline passengers. so the question again is - why now???
I pity the souls who do not have Pre-check. I get it though. I would guess that 80% of all air travelers only fly once or twice a year.
hate to say it ......... but - yes.
