One of the benefits of living in New York City-a place which often feels like it was expressly designed to discourage your presence-is the seemingly endless opportunities to see amazing, live music acts. Just within the past decade Ive had the chance to watch the New York Festival Orchestra perform a remarkable tribute to the victims of the 2011 Japanese earthquake, meet the Bangles at the Highline Ballroom, see a remarkable chamber orchestra at Lincoln Center, and attend concerts by groups and individual artists like Hello Seahorse, They Might Be Giants, Dramarama, Stevie Wonder, Los Lobos, Big Daddy Kane, Bad Religion, Beth Orton, and the Kronos Quartet. And, had I been able to, I would have seen the Pixies. All of these musicians-with a single exception-I watched perform without paying a cent.
Last night afforded me a similar opportunity, this time to watch 80s icon Gary Numan perform Telekon in its entirety at Gramercy Theatre. Although his first two nights received mixed reviews, with the exception of one major cockup towards the end of his set the performance I took in was largely flawless from a technical standpoint. One of my takeaways from the concert was the extent to which it was an exhibition of technical prowess, which probably shouldnt have been surprising coming from one of the pioneers of synth pop.

Was a big fan until he wrote and promoted a song about raping the Virgin Mary. Burned everything I had of him and never listened again. He is scum.
But now he apparently despises what the UK has become, a la Morrissey, and is living in the U.S.
Such A Christian display of tolerance
I remember Cars. That is about it. He is due in town soon but I will pass. My tastes in music have changed a bit and while I never saw him in his heyday I could imagine going to see him at that time if things had lined up just right. It would have to be something very special for me to shell out the bucks for a concert these days.
Tubeway Army.
The only concert I remember actually buying tickets for in recent memory is when Bad Religion performed on Cinco de Mayo a few years ago-and that was because I was entertaining a friend from out of town.
It turns out they were the opening act-and got off the stage after 40 minutes!
Me and the two middle-aged guys behind me seemed like the only ones infuriated by that.
Ping to one of your faves.
Must have missed that part in Church. I was taught to honor Jesus’s mom but if you feel like being snarky and defending someone who thinks its cool to write songs about raping Mary... Well good luck with that.
Numan has evolved into an alt-industrial act, Cars gets played as the encore but his current stuff is more like NIN.
Love Numan’s modern stuff.
Loved his early stuff, but lost interest after Telekon.
Useless fact: Gary Numan is older than Gary Oldman.
He was pretty energetic on stage.
This does explain the style of music, which after repeated listening, is quite appealing.
"Are Friends Electric" is probably one of the greatest songs ever written and performed.
It does explain some things.
