OUTNUMBERED, OUTRANGED, AND OUTGUNNED: HOW RUSSIA DEFEATS NATO
War on the Rocks ^ | April 21, 2016 | David A. Shlapak, Michael W. Johnson

Posted on 04/24/2016 5:28:26 PM PDT by 4FreeSpeach

When asked two weeks ago in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee whether the Army was “outranged” by any adversary, U.S. Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley said: “Yes … the ones in Europe, really Russia. We don’t like it, we don’t want it, but yes, technically [we are] outranged, outgunned on the ground.”

Given Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, this is sobering testimony. But is it accurate? Unfortunately, yes: Nearly two years of extensive wargaming and analysis shows that if Russia were to conduct a short-warning attack against the Baltic States, Moscow’s forces could roll to the outskirts of the Estonian capital of Tallinn and the Latvian capital of Riga in 36 to 60 hours. In such a scenario, the United States and its allies would not only be outranged and outgunned, but also outnumbered.

As Shlapak and Johnson conclude in their article: "It seems unlikely that Vladimir Putin intends to turn his guns on NATO any time soon. However, the consequences should he decide to do so are severe. Probably the best outcome — if the phrase has any meaning in this context — would be something like a new Cold War, with all the implications that bears. A war with Russia would be fraught with escalatory potential from the moment the first shot was fired; and generations born outside the shadow of nuclear Armageddon would suddenly be reintroduced to fears thought long dead and buried.

A situation 20 years in the making will not be solved overnight, nor will solving it be politically simple or non-controversial for an alliance consisting of 29 members with different priorities and perceptions. Nonetheless, the potential consequences of failing to do so are so dire that prudent investments — in improved posture and thoughtful, targeted modernization of the joint force — to stave them off are warranted to assure allies living next to a belligerent Russia and to provide an insurance policy against the risks of a potential catastrophe."

The US and the UK have always been outnumbered, throughout all of history, any time either or both of them got involved in a land war on the Eurasian continent.

This isn’t anything new.

We used to have a healthy manufacturing economy, however. We could build and build fast.

Here’s a simple and cheap solution to that problem: Distribute rifles, ammunition, and anti-tank weapons to every adult ethnic Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian in the Baltic States. Hold drills on guerrilla warfare. Every Balt is now a sniping, grenade throwing, rocket launching partisan. The Russians will never invade. The casualties would be to numerous.

But have not we been told that it is a mistake to prepare for the wars of our fathers. Infantry, tanks, and artillery are so 20th century. Why the war zones of the future will be dominated by technology, you know robots, drones and superior electronics! I really do not know if this deserves a sarcasm tag or not in the age of Obama.

What did Yogi Berra say? "Deja Vu all over again."

This sounds like the Fulda Gap in the 1980s. The Russkies were deployed along the DDR/FRG border with a couple of tank armies and the US/NATO forces were 24 hours away in the rear with a couple Divisions.

I think some smart military guy once said, "Defend well forward." Oh well....here we go again.

It appears that several dozen squadrons of A-10’s need to be activated and positioned in the Baltics to counter any Russian assault. No doubt Ruskie tanks would be a major element of the Russian assault.

Sorry. This article is ridiculous.

As much as Obama has degraded our military (using PC as an excuse), it still is unparalleled. Nobody could stand up to the US military in a heads-on battle. It wouldn’t even be close.

Putin may posture and have his planes buzz our aircraft carriers, but he is NOT going to pick this fight.

The death-loving Islamists might, but not Putin.

oh yes Russian aggression in Ukraine, after a bloody coup staged by Hillary's little helpers.

Weird how they don't discuss the whole Victoria Nuland thing. Or the Hunter Biden thing.

A plan worth considering. Similar plan works/worked for Switzerland............

Yes, and the Ukrainian protestors firing on their own. That’s when the bloodshed started. According to RT and Alex Jones.

Obama don’t need no stinkin’ drones and robots. Just a good printer to crank out strongly worded memoranda, preferably in lots of fonts because diversity matters most than the message.

Switzerland has these things called mountains. The Baltics are tank country. Before that, they were calvary country. Check your military history book.

The snipers shot both the protesters and the cops. The cops reacted by killing protesters as one might expect they would do. It was designed to be blamed on the Government.

Even the current Government of the Ukraine gave up trying to find the snipers. They interviewed tons of people and investigated for 6 months but no one had any idea who the snipers were.

That sounds a lot like a CIA false flag op or assorted mercenaries.
