There is a pistol-packing revolution going on in America. Nearly 13 million Americans have permits to carry concealed handguns — triple the number just nine years ago — and that figure is low because not every state reports.
It's puzzling that so many Americans are choosing to arm themselves at a time when the FBI tells us violent crime and property crime have been falling dramatically for two decades.
In search of handgun permit holders, I drove out to the Texas Firearms Festival, an outdoor gun extravaganza held near Austin where firearms fanciers get to shoot everything they see.
I'm not saying that being armed is gonna save your life, but at least you have an effective tool to mount some kind of defense.

The real reason people are buying so many guns is to replace the ones that they lost in the boating accidents. Just because you can shoot a gun doesn’t mean that you can paddle a canoe. I don’t know how many guns were recently lost in boating accidents. That’s also the real reason why the rivers and streams are rising. AGW be damned, its too many guns falling into America’s waterways. That’s my theory and I’m sticking too it. Now, I need to replace my handgun collection.
More concealed carry means less deaths in a crowd when a Leftie goes berserk.

The trained part is the key. Training is required in fewer and fewer states.

Funny you should mention that. When Obama mocked people for clinging to guns and Bibles it didn’t take me long to purchase more firearms and ammo. I also recently made my decision and have become a proud born again Christian. If Obama is against it, well, it must be right...... and Righteous.

Hmmm- let’s see- walkign in the woods, one comes across an aggressive acting bear or coyotoe or wolf or couger- takes out hte pistol- fires a warning shot, and the aggression turns to fear as the animal flees- (and then the person who fired the shot is arrested and jailed for ‘discharging a weapon somewhere in the US” and si then thrown prison in with thugs and murderers and rapists and has no gun anymore to protect himself)
Nope- he’s not safer
Different reasons for the two types listed here. SS agents and bodyguards carry them so they can effectively stop someone intent on doing harm to the person they have the responsibility of protecting.
Police officers and sheriffs carry them as a show of force to the public. The bigger the gun the better, and should be as visible as possible. The message that they want the public to be clear on is that the government makes the rules, and you'd better do what the government agents tell you. If you resist those government agents, and continue to resist, at some point the government will kill you.
Bodyguards and SS agents as a rule carry their weapons concealed because their responsibility is not to intimidate John Q. Public.

He is absolutely correct that crime has fallen dramatically since about 1990. And it has done so at a steady, predictable rate. And it is very low right now.
But he misses one big thing. Crime risk as a collective misses the point that crime is personal. If YOU are a victim, you couldn’t care less that murders are half from a few decades ago.
And also, though one may not be a crime victim, most people live the feeling of tranquility that a 38 in the pocket brings. A general sense of well-being. It is a feeling that you are a full voting member in your fate, and not just along for the ride.
And THAT, is the attitude they seek to kill in Americans.
