Polls and surveys showing someone other than Donald Trump in the lead among the final three contestants for the Republican nomination have to be viewed through the prism of enthusiasm among those who support him and his opponents.

A just released Gallup survey measuring the level of enthusiasm among Trump’s supporters found that 37% are extremely enthusiastic about voting for him and another 28% are very enthusiastic for a whopping 65% on the enthusiasm scale.

For Trump, this compares very favorably to the level of enthusiasm among Ted Cruz supporters which stand at 22% extremely enthusiastic and 17% very enthusiastic for an enthusiasm level of just 39%. John Kasich’s extremely enthusiastic supporters are at 16% and his very enthusiastic supporters are at 17% giving him an enthusiasm level of 33%.

This huge enthusiasm advantage Trump enjoys over his Republican opponents’ carries over in a comparison to the enthusiasm of Hillary Clinton’s supporters as well. Trump’s total 65% enthusiasm far eclipses Clinton’s 54% level.

Moreover this high level of enthusiasm for Trump compares very favorably to the level of enthusiasm for voting by all among Americans.

Contrary to the enthusiasm of Trump supporters which Gallup calls, “extraordinarily high,” the overall level of voter enthusiasm in America has fallen from 54% in January to 47% today.

While enthusiasm is not always a true indicator of eventual turn-out, any candidate would rather be in Trump’s position than...

It’s hard to observe that gap on Free Republic.

Out in the world, I hear a fair amount from people about Trump but mostly joking or negative. I hear nothing at all about Cruz. A surprising number are at least somewhat favorable to Sanders. This is just talk, office, family, acquaintances. I think people who support Trump tend to understate because of the flak myself.

I would say the 10% of Freepers who are kamacruzies are very enthusiastic for their boy.

But then there’s that 10% thing.

Enthusiasm matters, I’d think, in terms of getting to the polls if it’s inconvenient, such as if there’s bad weather or long lines.

However the negatives on Trump are way beyond other candidates, IOW Trump is very polarizing.

Cruzebots are few and far between at this point. They band together on Cruz threads but most people are onto him by now.

One has given people something to vote for and draws in thousands at every stop.

The other is nothing but being against the other guy and can maybe get a few hundred.

Gee cant imagine why that enthusiasm gap exists at all!

Once Cruz is defeaTED and the GOPe capitulates those negatives can be reversed. Go away, go neutral, just stop attacking Trump so Trump can get on with winning the general election.

I know that I am more enthusiastic for Trump than I have been for any politician in a long time.

I’ve been enthusiastic about other candidates, but the media/establishment has managed to destroy them all before they ever became a real danger to the establishment. Trump is harder to destroy, since he was well-known long before he threw his hat in the ring.

From the primaries and word of mouth, I kinda wonder if this “negativism” is invented......

We will see how Wisconsin settles. After weeks of infighting and taking multiple positions on abortion, I’m not sure Trump has the self discipline needed to recapture the majority of voters. My hope is that he does.

Untrue. The posters for Cruz are either die-hard Texans (understandable), Iowans (desperate to finally pick a winner) or part of his campaign. The FR daily caucus support is < 15%. His polls reflect his accumulated votes.

Aside from Texas,

Cruz’s winnings equal the population of Wichita., ha,ha.

What electoral votes does he accumulate with states like WY, ID, IA, ND, KS, ME, UT, etc. What numbers will Ted bring in the GE, when it counts? ...

Ted’s been a loser riding on Trump’s coattails for too long.

Cruz lost the entire evangelical South!
Cruz lost 3 key battleground states: FL OH & VA
Cruz has no legitimate path to victory.
Crus is being propped up by the media.
Cruz wins in states with the lowest electors.
Cruz is not needed to deliver Texas in the G.E.

Cruz is good for sabotaging a proven winner, nothing more.
And it’s reflective of his popularity in the polls.

Both Cruz and Trump are miles ahead of the enthusiam that the Dem base is feeling for Hillary Rodham Clinton, which lies between wet paper towel and fatalistic resignation. Either can beat Hillary Clinton and beat her decisively as long as there s no major third party run.
