Plenty of regrets for Patriots in their 'game of inches' loss

DENVER — Stephen Gostkowski kept pausing in the middle of his sentences, trying to hold it together and not cry at his locker.

"I just feel terrible," said Gostkowski, the normally automatic New England Patriots kicker whose missed extra point ended up being a huge difference in the Patriots' 20-18 AFC championship game loss to the Denver Broncos. "These guys work a lot, all day, put their bodies and lives on the line and for us to come out here and lose by a point and me to miss that kick, it's a nightmare scenario."

Tom Brady spoke in a monotone with a polite smile, understanding that he and his team just missed a great opportunity, and nobody can ever be sure when those dry up.

"Well, I want to win it every year," Brady said. "Hopefully I have more opportunities for that."

I’m not all that impressed - yet! - with Carolina. Their schedule was middling, and mid- to late-fourth quarter against the Seahawks, they started falling apart. AND Denver has a lot to play for, especially Manning. But we’ll all see. Could be a good game.

If they were trying to equalize the extra kicker field, they succeeded, but what a shame for his record.

I believe he is the best there has ever been, and Dallas used to live and die on it’s kickers.

Ah come on!

We’d have kicked their butts in OT anyway.

, waiting for the Patriots to win the AFC Championship game so they could start spewing out T-shirts at a rate of about one-thousand per hour from their machine.

It’s called the Fairness Doctrine. The NFL couldn’t let the NE Patriots win it all again.

at 39, he will be the oldest quarterback to play in the NFL's showpiece event.

Beating out fellow Bronco John Elway.

Even Craig Morton was considered old and washed up when he led the Broncos to their first Super Bowl trip in 1977. (QBs were "old" at 34 back then).

Cannon sucked worse.

My coach always told me that if I was going to be a lineman, it would be best if the head coach never heard my name during a game. We heard Cannon’s name a lot yesterday.

Granted, Brady had poor protection from his front line. But he rarely left the pocket.

But when he did have a chance to pass, he missed his targets by a lot. He has the best receivers in the NFL - but they rarely had a chance to make a catch. Under-thrown. Over-thrown. Led by way too much. Intercepted.

For some reason, he couldn’t figure out that the running game wasn’t working at all. But he still kept handing the ball off.

Brady is over-rated.

Not a Pats fan, but Belichick blew it going on 4th down instead of kicking a field goal.

Denver Broncos' 20-18 win over the New England Patriots was the most-watched AFC title game in 29 years and drew a 31.8 overnight share. That number means roughly 37 million televisions in the U.S.were tuned to the game.

The 1986 AFC title game between Denver and the Cleveland Browns – better known for "The Drive" – drew a 31.9 rating when it aired on Jan. 11, 1987.

Brady came close to pulling it out, when realistically he shouldn’t have even been close to coming through. In many ways, yesterday’s game made me think even more highly of him, because of the way he fought through it. He’s a tough bird, and I don’t see how anybody doesn’t respect him, even if they don’t like him.

Hindsight's 20/20. At least Denver was pinned back in field position. If New England kicks the FG, then most likely Denver has better field position and probably wouldn't have played so conservatively on offense.

What does the Bronco who did not recover that missed lateral think?

Without his gratuitous turnover, the Patriots do not score that first touchdown!!!

The announcers acted like it was a no brainer to go for it on 4th, but I thought then, before they went for it, that I would have kicked the field goal. It would have taken it from an eight point lead to five points. There were 2 1/2 minutes on the clock and the Pats had all three time outs. They'd have to get a stop, but they were going to need two scores to win, anyway.

That said, if the Panthers can win the Super Bowl, maybe Cam Newton can afford to buy his own laptop, and won't have to steal them, anymore.

At the time I was more inclined to go for it, that’s the way it goes sometimes, if it works, you look like a genius, and if it doesn’t you’re dumb. That’s football.
