Plenty of regrets for Patriots in their 'game of inches' loss

DENVER — Stephen Gostkowski kept pausing in the middle of his sentences, trying to hold it together and not cry at his locker.

"I just feel terrible," said Gostkowski, the normally automatic New England Patriots kicker whose missed extra point ended up being a huge difference in the Patriots' 20-18 AFC championship game loss to the Denver Broncos. "These guys work a lot, all day, put their bodies and lives on the line and for us to come out here and lose by a point and me to miss that kick, it's a nightmare scenario."

Tom Brady spoke in a monotone with a polite smile, understanding that he and his team just missed a great opportunity, and nobody can ever be sure when those dry up.

"Well, I want to win it every year," Brady said. "Hopefully I have more opportunities for that."

Such is the great big pity.

Patriots lost? Good. Knowing that there is much weeping and wailing in Red England this morning makes a sunny day even nicer.

Patriots were having problems with its Microsoft Surface tablets on the sideline, which are critical for teams to watch film and quickly review in-game action.

The Patriots pushed for a longer extra point. It may have cost them their season.

I'm a Patriots fan. But you know what: "You live by the sword, you die by the sword". How many games have they won by inches because of very clever schemes?

They've made a few out-of-character mistakes this year. Could be that SuperBowl last year was a very excellent exclamation point to what Brady/Belechik have accomplished.

JMHO

The missed point after in the first TD forced the Pats into going for two at the end. But for the kicker's failure to make that first extra point, the game would have gone into OT, everything else being the same.

Plus, he broke a string of 520+ consecutive extra points. Had to happen sometime.

Carolina would have killed them in the SuperBowl. All for the better the game turned out the way it did, and I'm generally a Pats/Sox fan.

Gostkowski didn’t lose that game all by himself nor did the Minnesota Viking’s kicker when he missed a sure game winning field goal attempt. Winning takes the entire team and they just didn’t have it. Can’t win ‘em all.

What would you expect the birds to say? We have a chance to win it every year that’s why all you guys hate us so much.

They made three first quarter mistakes - missed extra point, interception in their own end, Jamie Collins forgot to cover Daniels and it was 14-6. The game then went 6-6 for 50 minutes of clock time. Denver was game, the Pats were game and it came down to a failed 2 point try they had to have but didn’t make because of those first quarter mistakes.

The Pats had no offensive line, no running backs and couldn’t pass block either. Their weakness played into Denver’s strength. It was player Brady’s 10th AFC Championship game, only 4 TEAMS have more. We lost. It was the teams 5th straight AFC Championship game, only the Raiders ever did that. We’ll be back next year again and you all know you can count on that.

Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, criticised all season after struggling with poor form and injury, has a chance to win his second Super Bowl title. And at 39, he will be the oldest quarterback to play in the NFL's showpiece event.

Did anyone check for a deflated football?

Reporting in from Bronco country ... reading the on-line version of the Boston Globe this AM. Lot of whining going on in Beantown ... Patriot fan smugness in the red state took a huge hit. As an aside the Boston Globe just endorsed Hillary.
Another loser for them ...

Patriots fan also. But coaching lost that game for them. Aside from the fact that they couldn't plug the leaks in the front line and the run game was crap, they had plenty of time on the clock in the 4th qtr. on forth down in the red zone. Kick the field goal and get your defense to get you the ball back. They would have had a chance to win the game in regulation.

But no sore sport here congrats to the Broncos and Good Luck. Watching the Panthers they're going to need all the luck they can muster because panthers look unstoppable.

Gostkowski had 423 consecutive extra points in regular season. That is an incredible statistic, unreachable by normal human beings.

I cannot imagine how he could possibly feel anything different than what he is feeling now.
