The way I read it the cases of whiskey was found beneath the floor of a hut, the cases were “covered” in ice, so the whiskey itself may not have been frozen.

Similar thing happened to me yesterday. I found a bottle of whiskey in the wine rack that I’d put there last week. The difference is we didn’t get a special deal for it so we just drank it.
