Thanks Berlin_Freeper.
Howland, who boarded the ship as Carver's servant, probably had a greater impact on the history of the United States than any of them. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will sit down for Thanksgiving dinner Thursday unaware that they owe their very existence to Howland, who almost never even made it to the New World. Howland fell overboard in the middle of the Atlantic during a gale...
Thanksgiving? Thanks for living through that gale, John.

I am connected to two Mayflower famillies on my paternal grandmother’s side. :)

I’m also descended from John Howland’s brother. Henry Howland through his son, Zoeth Howland and his wife Abigail Booth. My research shows that I am either descended from or related somehow to about 2/3rds of the Mayflower passengers. Tisquatum (Squanto) and Hobomock are names still respectfully used as place names in the area. The correct pronunciation of the name Hobomock is Hob-ba-mock not Hoe-bow-mock as I heard an outstater once say.

A commune? Or a contractual business arrangement?

21twelve, funny story.

I descend from Henry Howland’s daughter, Abigail. In the late 1600’s, my Massachusetts descendants became Quakers and moved to Pennsylvannia, but almost all my other ancestors are from Virginia. Going back 5 generation when there are 32 GGgrandparents, 28 are from Virginia, 2 from Germany, and 2 from Pennsylvannia (one of which was a descendant of Henry Howland). The earliest ancestor I can prove arrived in Jamestown in 1619, there are earlier ones but I doubt if they could be proven to the satisfaction of the Jamestown Society.

Both I guess. Glad that they were able to change the terms of the agreement and make it a success.

From my previous link:

*** The colony’s leaders identified the source of their problem as a particularly vile form of what Bradford called “communism.” Property in Plymouth Colony, he observed, was communally owned and cultivated. This system (”taking away of property and bringing [it] into a commonwealth”) bred “confusion and discontent” and “retarded much employment that would have been to [the settlers’] benefit and comfort.” ***

This topic was posted 11/26/2015, thanks again Berlin_Freeper. A re-ping.
And thanks again, to John Howland and all my other ancestors for the hardships endured.

DEFINITELY one of my ancestors! He did alright for an indentured servant. Could well be the actual “Father” of our country!

Yes he did. His wife had her own share of the Compact, plus the two shares from her late parents (they died in the first year or two), and John had one (despite his being indentured), so when they married, they had four. Must have split about 50 times by now. ;^)

One of his brothers (and hence, their parents) is the ancestor of Winston Churchill’s mom — among our more famous cousins. :^)

The last remaining structure that ever housed Pilgrims is this one:

“Pilgrims shmilgrims.”

I agree. My ancestors had already held two thanksgivings and formed America’s first elected government down in Jamestown and Bermuda Hundred before the glory hog Pilgrims stopped on their beer run at Plymouth Rock.

I have a photocopy somewhere of a newspaper that listed some links to Lady Di and Winston Churchill and a few others. I haven’t dug around much into genealogy lately, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I were eligible for the DAR.

Fun stuff, but in the long run, they don’t pay my bills so what good are they? (I don’t want to seem arrogant by naming names I’m related to.)
