Will 2016 Be The Year Of Wireless Energy?

Wireless power has been a dream of mankind’s for decades, but the technology finally appears to be gaining some traction. Theoretically, numerous studies have shown that wireless power is possible through a variety of aerial transmission modalities. Yet the problem with wireless power has been getting the technology to work at a reasonable range.

So far, commercial use of wireless power has been limited, but progress is being made. For instance, Samsung now has a commercially available wireless charger for its cell phones. With the charger, consumers do not need to plug their phone into the wall for it to charge.

Unfortunately though, the consumer still has to place their phone onto the wireless charging pad meaning that there is a still a physical connection required to power the phone. Even wireless devices like Qi and PowerMat only work to wirelessly power from about an inch away; hardly the kind of freedom that would empower consumers to use devices in new ways. Given that limitation, the wireless charging for the phone is a gimmick or cool tech toy depending on your perspective, rather than a true game changer for mobile devices.

Short answer: “No”

Nor will 2026. Or 36.

No, it will be the beginning of Muslin terrorism in the United States. Thank Obama.

Dunno about that Tesla feller. I mean, who names their kid after a car, anyway?

IMHO, the greatest mind that ever existed. If he had been able to put more of his work down on paper, we would have wireless energy. Everything that he said he could do, he eventually made it happen.

But his greatest moment was his practical joke on Samuel Clemens. Pure brilliant.

The losses are too great to be ignored for any meaningful distance or significant amounts of power.

Charging a cell phone from a fraction of an inch is a far different requirement than powering an vehicle or a home.

You need to look at this before you give short answers.

If he had been able to put more of his work down on paper, we would have wireless energy.

It wasn't from lack of completion. It was built and used several times.

The losses in such a system are immense.

I’m not a health nut, but how will this “wireless Power” be transmitted? What will this do to the life on this planet to be bathed in “wireless Power”

I do remember reading that Tesla felt he could improve on and fix those problems. It was his backers who felt it was useless, they couldn’t figure out how to charge for the power.

The scares about “health effects” will kill this faster than you can say “cancer.”

The benefits aren’t that big — I don’t need to plug in my EV at night? Or my phone?

Call me when you can wirelessly power my EV rolling down the highway or space-based power generation with microwave transmission is real. Of course, if you think central solar receivers kill a lot of birds, bats, and insects, just wait until you have wide high-power microwave beams arriving on the ground.

Direct wireless power and communication interconnections across rotating and moving "joints" - for robots, packaging machinery, assembly machinery, machine tools and more - eliminating costly and failure-prone wiring

Decided to look it up and saw this bullet point. That alone is a huge game changer. Joints of robots or prosthesis have always been one of the weak points in their construction. This could be a real improvement on these devices in ways not imaginable previously.

In my opinion, Tesla thought it could be worked out because in his day, the amount of power we now consume was beyond even his imagination.

He viewed the immense power of Niagara to greatly exceed any power we would ever want. In those parameters, the losses were not as important.

Today’s world is far different.

The technology works. It is in use and companies have expanded well past the phone charger on a plate. But physics have not changed, and the losses are still immense.

Magnetic resonance - and I wonder the same thing. Given the high level of power being transmitted, what will it do to the cells and chemicals in our body. There’s a lot of electric activity going on within our body, how will that be effected.

Just imagine those who protest cell phone towers and high voltage transmission lines when told that megawatts of power will be transmitted through the air in every neighborhood.
