Shooting Shows Why Gun Control Activists Hate Concealed Carry
Gun Watch ^ | 7 November, 2015 | Dean Weingarten

A shooting  in Gage Park, in Southwest Chicago, illustrates why gun control activists (disarmists) have fought so hard to keep people with concealed carry permits out of the city.

In this case, the armed customer shot and killed an armed robber who was attempting to rob a cash exchange store where the owner's two teenage sons were working.   To understand why disarmists hate the idea of concealed carry permits, read the comments from people in the area.  From dnainfo.com:

From the store owner and the boys' mother:

"All I know is that someone came in here threatening my sons, and this angel used a gun he was allowed to carry, and he saved them," Cabrales said.
From the owner of a store two doors away:
"I don't believe in vigilante justice, but I don't know what would have happened if that guy hadn't been there," Guzman said. "I mean, the same thing could just as easily have happened to my store."
From a shop owner down the block, who was robbed a month ago:
"I do trust the police, but lately I really haven't felt safe here," Vidales said. "I never like violence, but in [this] case, I think he did the right thing. I'm glad he was there.
From another business owner on the block:
"Seeing that happen right on this block makes me think I'd feel much better if I were armed, and if my customers were armed," Cruz said. "Now I want to get a concealed carry permit myself."
The successful implementation of shall issue concealed carry across the country has resulted in thousands of stories of the successful use of guns to defend oneself and others.  Most of the time, no shots are fired, no one is hit and no one is killed.

When an aggressor is killed, the shooting is seldom recorded in the FBI uniform crime reports (UCR) as a justified shooting, because the FBI requires that a report of a felony accompany the report of a justified shooting.  There was no robbery here, because the robbery was stopped.  That is one of the reasons why the FBI UCR severely under reports justified homicides.

Concealed carry holders undercut the entire narrative that disarmists have been trying to build in the national psyche for decades.  You have heard it often enough: Guns are bad.  Guns cause crime.  Guns are useless for self defense.

When people see concrete examples that contradict that narrative, they change their mind.  Mr. Cruz, the last business owner cited, changed his:
the attempted robbery and shooting changed the way he thought about guns.
It is much harder to disarm people who have concrete knowledge that guns can be successfully and lawfully used to defend oneself and others.

This case is a classic example of why the disarmists wanted to keep Chicago a zone free of legal guns.

I believes most state criminal codes include "attempts," i.e. attempted homicide, attempted armed robbery, etc. which would also be felonies. If they are not reported or documented simply because the perpetrator was iced at the scene, that's a matter of laziness on the part of local police.

I stopped in a convenience store the other day - don’t usually go there and noticed a “No Weapons” sign. Decided to go to my car (in front of the window by the register) and stash my gun in it. When i got to the counter, the gal asked me what i had done (she couldn’t actually see the gun, just the motions) and I told her I did what none of the bad guys would do and abided by their sign. She looked at me with a half-open mouth for a second and then said, “Geez, you’re right”. She’s just a clerk, but who knows if the manager will hear anything about it.

A story as old as time: figures don't lie but liars do figure.

Glad to see one store owner gets it while the others are mealy-mouthing their reaction. Sounds like the bleating of sheep, IMO.

Glad you made this comment. I was feeling exactly the same way. It sure has the smell of sheep. Even the guy who ‘gets it’ really doesnt. Yes, having a gun to save your property and skin is good. Its much better to understand that being armed is a PART of your birthright as a citizen. Its that attitude which is missing. You go from a peasant grovelling for permission to be armed to a stakeholder. At the root of this isnt guns per se its initiative. What liberals hate most is a person who takes the initiative and makes a way for themselves. They go from ward to owner.

Y’all, this is CHICAGO. They’re new to this 2A stuff, but they’re learning. Speak blessings and optimism into the situation! It’s a step in the right direction, even if they aren’t as far along as some of you.

FRegards

Other than being expensive and time consuming our CCL laws in Illinois are actually pretty good.

It is your choice but if they don’t know you have a CONCEALED weapon why disarm yourself?

I think it is a duty to disobey immoral laws.

Cabrales

Guzman

Vidales

Cruz

These people are not buying what the anti-gunners are selling. A small but encouraging sign in the culture war.

Story leaves out that the UN doesn’t accept justified homicide in their stats, they only report death by firearm... doesn’t matter if it was justified or even a police shooting.

This prevented a small redistribution of wealth. Not a liberal ideal.

I usually do ignore the signs - this was a special case/opportunity and I didn't want to make the point while "trespassing" (general charge against those who ignore the signs and get caught with weapons). Besides - in warm weather I usually just leave my shirt out over the weapon and it isn't bulge-free unless I modify the way I carry which makes it less comfortable and a little slower to access.
