I have a direct number to the dispatcher, bypasses 911. Lots of law enforcement friends.

I have done this. I have had a police officer pull me over and want to write me a ticket. I only opened my window a tiny crack and told him I would drive to the nearest police station or well lit gas station or store that is open. Then I drove very slowly until I got to Once there he wrote the ticket but did not say anything about me not staying at the place I was pulled over.

HPD only uses marked vehicles for traffic stops for this reason.

I must also add, when in doubt, stop only in a clearly lit area - a gas station, convenience store, etc. The officer will not like it at first, but if explained courteously (I must emphasize), he will understand, especially if there is a spate of fake cop predators. This I have been told by several law enforcement officers in the Houston area.

Interesting. Is that the Chief or something with the big red light? I see the regular ones have what looks like all blue lights.

I was driving behind a dark colored minivan on a winding two lane rural Lancaster county road early last winter on my way home from work. It was pretty dark by then and the driver of the van hadn’t turned on their lights. The only time I could “see” it was when he/she applied their brakes. Other than that the van was nearly invisible, very dangerous.

I flashed my high beams several times and even turned off and turned back on my head lights to try to get the driver’s attention as did many other drivers coming in the opposite direction.

This went on for several miles until the driver finally got the hint that their lights were not on and finally turned them on.

Eventually she made a slow right turn and as I passed her, I saw she was a Mennonite woman (could see her starched white cap) and that the van was full of kids.

So I was glad I and other drivers tried to get her attention to turn on her headlights which she finally did and I would sure be grateful if someone did the same for me.

That's a tough call. I still tend to do that, especially in rural Idaho. It's almost automatic. Now I'll try not to, at least in the city.

Michigan State Police.

They mostly all have a single red light on top (with some exceptions).
