Bet she doesn’t give two poots about offshoring and visa workers for degreed tech engineering positions.

today they can pay not much more than a prison kitchen supervisor position.

Mandating salaries isn’t the answer. Opening our doors to cheap foreign labor needs to stop.

The “discomfort” of paying at the register has been eased.

They give you a debit card these days for some services (like unemployment) and can even let it debit via a Chase card so no one else in line has to even know.

Her anger is misdirected. It should be put firmly on the administration and their failed economic policies that have placed her in this position.

She said:

Then suddenly I had two kids, a divorce, a single, crappy job, and all of the expenses of a household on my head.

...in item No. 2 in the list she made.

For those whose lives have been smooth sailing, I am happy for you. You may blame it on planning, sound judgement, being a good judge of character, whatever, and you'd be half right.

Marriage takes two, and if one stops, it's over. Divorce has hardships well beyond emotional/spiritual, and is only part of or the instigating moment in some serious life changes.

Going to school takes time and money, and with two kids, that gets tough.

Note she works one or more jobs, and mentions no time where she doesn't work at all.

This is 'food stamps' (equivalent), not full blown welfare.

If you took the costs written into all she purchases and what her employer pays to have her on the payroll for the actions of the Government, and gave that money to her in increased wages, she'd likely be getting by much better.

The living wage thingy was sad (probably the only reason the piece was published). Those jobs were never meant to feed a family, and I notice there is no mention of tips.

Kids can complicate life to the point where it can be difficult to raise them and hold down a job, especially when shifts are not predictable. It is a different world than the steady world of 9 to 5 so many live in. If you are one who works from 9 to 5, remember everyone else you see working when you are off work doesn't--and there are a lot of people who don't.

If she is on minimum wage with two kids, she’s on more than SNAP.....you can pretty much bet she’s shaped her argument to only one of the entitlements she gets.

With her income and dependents, she’s definitely getting a few thousand free cash each year in EITC. That bare bones phone is probably an ObamaPhone. You qualify for SNAP - you qualify for that phone and you can get signed up for one in a New York minute.

That house on the edge of town her grandparents bought to ‘rent’ to her. Is it on Section 8? Does she get nearly all of that rent paid?

While we’re at it. If she’s so poor, then she’s probably drawing SSI for the two children, too.

The problem with entitlements is that they’re so easy to get if you don’t have anything much. Just a kid or two and a nowhere job does it most times. And if you get one program, you’re prequalified for many of the others. It never stops at “just that one.”

I was not surprised to see that you live in California. Of course! Move to GA and get a job! (or almost anywhere else)

Evidently, a lot of people don’t seem to get the fact that not everybody can get a highly skilled well paid job, society needs people working the unskilled and semi skilled jobs too. Why shouldn’t they be able to earn enough to raise a family without government assistance? Don’t forget that it is YOUR TAXES that are going to subsidise corporations to pay chickenfeed wages that are supplemented by government assistance.

Bingo. Does this person actually exist? Or is “she” the product of a couple of liberal minds with an axe to grind. “She” certainly covered ALL the stereotype lib bases in her critque of the world.

“This is her first published article.”

And hopefully her last.

First things I thought....where’s the father? Was she married to him? Did she marry a loser? Why didn’t she get out of food service, seeing as the pay is too low? Did she have children knowing she couldn’t afford them?

Demanding a living wage for doing a job that requires very little skill is not realistic. Wouldn’t it be easier to change your vocation rather than pressure the government to shakedown your employers?

This is the goal is a socialist government to limit opportunities through the destruction of the free market where even those who want to work hard and be independent get sucked into the welfare wormhole. And good for her oldest being in the international baccalaureate program. That can be a stepping stone to the ivy league.

If this lady is telling the truth, she’s one in a million.

I lived in a welfare town for 18 LONG years and they waste their money and have no reservations about cheating the system.

I see references to “kids” but no reference to “father” or “husband”.

There is this part in paragraph 1): "...our rent had just gone up and there were two adults but only one of us had a job." Sounds like married and divorced.

Where to begin.

... kids ...

If you can't afford to feed kids you shouldn't have kids

The most underpaid workers are often the ones you'd miss if they weren't there

Sorry whiner, you're not underpaid. You're paid exactly what you're worth. You want more money? Learn a more valuable skill.

5) I'm not poor because I'm lazy or stupid or uneducated

Wrong again. Tootsie roll you're both lazy AND stupid and a perfect example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

My older child is terrifyingly brilliant

LOL at this one. All I can say is, NOT IF HE HAS YOUR GENES.

why don't you start valuing my time as highly as you value yours?

BEACUSE YOUR TIME ISN'T AS VALUABLE AS MINE. Not by a long shot.

This loser has a bone deep sense of entitlement. She has not the slightest concept of economics. She exhibits evidence of a lifetime of making poor decisions (multiple kids and she has a "fiancé" )In short she's just the sort of person I'd like to see squeezed off the public trough.
