Ex-Nobel committee exec regrets Obama Peace Prize [Buyer's Remorse]

Former Secretary of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee Geir Lundestad reportedly notes in his new book that the body “didn't achieve what it had hoped for” when it gave Barack Obama the benefit of the doubt and conferred the prestigious award on him in 2009. While it is quite rare for Nobel officials to openly discuss the nuts and bolts of their secretive committee, the former director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute has apparently owned up in his memoir ‘Secretary of Peace’, to be released on Thursday, that the panel had expected the award to somewhat challenge Obama, who received the Nobel Peace Prize during his first term.

The Norwegian historian told AP that the committee "thought it would strengthen Obama and it didn't have this effect." The five members of the Nobel Committee, often former politicians, are appointed by the Norwegian parliament. The coveted award was met with an avalanche of criticism instead. An army of opponents noted that Obama had made no foreign policy achievements worthy of the prize in less than nine months in office. On top of this, he received the award while the US was engaged in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan...

Since Yasser Arafat, father of modern terrorism, won the Nobel Peace prize in 1994 the award has become politicized to the point of irrelevancy. Arguably the most unqualified president elected in American history, the community organizer, adjunct professor of law, and senator from Illinois received the Nobel Peace Prize just 9 months after being in office having accomplished nothing. The question begs, why now is the Nobel Committee suffering from "Buyer's Remorse"? What agenda has he not accomplished that had hoped?

The Nobel Committee must have hoped that the socialistic Chrislamic American President was going to usher in an age of Islamic-Christian social brotherhood with the homophilic western world (Jews excluded). They must have thought that the "pro-abortion", "pro-sodomy", "anti-christian", "pro-muslim", "anti-constitution", and "anti-semitic" president was the one to realize this. What has Barack Hussein Obama done in reality? He has destabilized the tenuous middle east order and destroyed its Christianity. He has built ISIS (or ISIL as he calls it) from the ground up with its new title of most dangerous terror organization in the world. He has created a refugee crises bringing millions of Islamists to roost in Europe, and through his push for open borders he has weakened all the nations of the world. Perhaps the Nobel Committee sees now that their mistake may result in the change their award from "Nobel" to "Mohammed Prize", because this is Europe's bold new future...thanks to Obama...

So it's given for what the committee hopes you'll do rather than for what has been done. A narcissist would probably see the prize as his due just for being such a fantastic human being.

Obama well deserves this prize. He's made it his life's mission to be just like the award.

This Nobel guy needs to be made to own that.
You gave him the award based on his skin color - own it!

I would argue that it is a “liberal panderer’s remorse”, in that the Peace Prize committee was dominated by the left to far left of Norway’s political parties. Like the skin-color voters in 2008, it was a near irresistible desire demonstrate one’s progressive fellowship to Obama as he became the second black President although the first one that would convince a camera.

It kind of did. All the pro-Obama people thought it gave him a boost in legitimacy. All the rest of us knew it didn’t, but there was a big crowd that was all “see he got a Nobel, he’s going to open dialog” and all that crap. Of course all that kind of artificial boosting evaporated 3 months later when he’d done exactly nothing. But for a short window it did enhance his cred, and if he wasn’t an idiot he might have been able to leverage that for something.

So it’s a tool not a prize then? They give it expecting to manipulate outcomes.

I’ve met Lundestad. FWIW, he has about eight fingers total (approximately, I didn’t want to stare). The story is that he lost a few in a power tool accident.
