I cannot get a straight answer to the question “What is the cost to settle a ‘refugee’ (typically a family of ‘refugees’) and make them part of our society.
I mean a real total of processing abroad, transportation, living allowances, translation services, medical treatment, supplementary income, and others. Data 20 years old and way under-valued by now is at http://www.utexas.edu/lbj/uscir/respapers/efc-feb97.pdf.
That would include: 1.) initial costs and ongoing by the Fed (report estimates $8600/year for healthcare alone) 2.) initial costs and ongoing by the States 3.) initial costs and ongoing by the charities (personnel, shelters, advisors – all are costs borne by Americans, charity or not) 4.) Costs to American legal and businesses. (Example: Medical staff must provide translators when the patient says they require one. The doctors are not reimbursed and so that cost is passed on to the English-speaking patients). 5.) Cost to local governments including increased crime, need for translators, etc.
If these are refugees rather than illegal immigrants then why aren’t they being put into camps and cordoned off where they can get minimal services etc.until they can be repatriated to their home countries. Does it make any sense to release them into housing with public assistance etc.? The whole point is to give them a safe haven not to give them a leg up in life where they don’t go home.
and how much do the contractors get that are demanding we take in many more...
