Woman, 80, trampled to death in Venezuelan supermarket stampede

An 80-year-old Venezuelan woman died, possibly from trampling, in a scrum outside a state supermarket selling subsidized goods, the opposition and media said on Friday. The melee at the store in Sabaneta, the birthplace of former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, was the latest such incident in the South American nation where economic hardship and food shortages are creating long queues and scuffles.

The opposition Democratic Unity coalition said Maria Aguirre died and another 75 people were injured – including five security officials – in chaotic scenes when National Guard troops sought to control a 5,000-strong crowd with teargas.

“Due to the shortage of food … the desperation is enormous,” local opposition politician Andres Camejo said, according to the coalition’s website. It published a photo of an elderly woman’s body lying inert on a concrete floor.

Camejo said thieves had also attacked the crowd, members of which were seeking to buy cheap food on offer at an outlet of the state’s Mercal supermarket chain in Barinas state.

"Huh?"

I tend to pay more attention to a politician's record of voting or administration than to what a politician says, social concerns or personality issues. I'm more analytical and don't pay much attention to appearances or speeches.

Thanks for the gardening and nutrition tip. Squash, corn and beans are easy to grow, too. :-)

No, in a SHTF situ Ammo is a better currency. Easily divided into smaller parts (Cases to boxes to single rounds) and has real value.

Food can be grown or raised but in a real SHTF situ Ammo would be hard to get so stocking up on Ammo could get you many things that were up for trade. Ammo needs some serious manufacturing infrastructure to produce from scratch So it will be very valuable.

Anytime FRiend.

I am surprised the Three Sisters have not been discussed here. Every prepper should at least put away seeds for that style of garden. They are also easy seeds to harvest and save.

Maybe Kart could start a thread discussing it. The method is productive and life saving.

I did, you seem to think that ammo is only good for killing or intimidation to rob etc. but in fact it is good for trade and a much better currency that anything else in a true SHTF situ. It can literally get you almost anything in a SHTF scenario. 9mm and 12ga. and .22 rimfire will be worth more than Gold if we suffer an actual total collapse.

I've been gardening in 5 gallon buckets that are on carts I made from repurposed pallets and used lumber.

I live in a downtown area in a big commercial building with no yard. I roll my garden out during the day and park it on the sidewalks and roll it back in at night. We are divesting ourselves of all our rental properties and looking for a place out of town but even when we move to a place where I can plant a proper garden I am still going to use the buckets and carts too. You can get them out sooner and keep them out longer in the growing season if you have a warm place to store them at night. And they are safer indoors at night and harder to steal and can be rolled inside during harsh storms that can damage plants.

No one will turn their gold in, but rather use it under the table as currency.

You'll be turned in by a snitch if you do (use it as currency). Every country has them in those circumstances. The snitches gain special privileges and favors.

Ammo. It’ll get you anything you want.

Apologies for my posts. I was not thinking of ammo as a commodity, but as a tool. My bad. Sorry.

That's the spirit!

Threaten. Steal. Kill if you must!

Much better than preparing.

Having ammo on hand is a big part of preparation.

If you can not defend what you do have, you will soon have nothing.

Excellent. Got at least two types of corn on the shelf.

Don’t have a garden. Yet.

Agreed! Squash is easy to grow, even here, at over 9,000 feet.

"Maybe Kart could start a thread discussing it. The method is productive and life saving. "

That would be a great idea! There's also the garden thread posted by greeneyes each Friday (often good information in those threads). Info and links for companion planting would be welcome there, too.

Let's put it this way. I have no illusions that I will be driving to black market locations at 3 am and bartering with my fellow panicked citizens to exchange it for what I need for me and my family.

Moreover, if we have an actual economic meltdown, I fully expect Obama to declare that the possession, sale, transfer, and "hording" of gold is illegal (via Executive Order).

The big differences between 1933 and 2015 are the level of government tyranny in our lives, and the level of surveillance they have over our every electronic move (including phone conversations).

In 1933, people were arrested, their safety deposit boxes raided and seized, and people thrown in jail.

I would fully expect Obama and his henchmen to make "examples" out of a lot of people.

Possessing gold could qualify you as a terrorist in the future. This is not out of the realm of possibility.
