An 80-year-old Venezuelan woman died, possibly from trampling, in a scrum outside a state supermarket selling subsidized goods, the opposition and media said on Friday. The melee at the store in Sabaneta, the birthplace of former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, was the latest such incident in the South American nation where economic hardship and food shortages are creating long queues and scuffles.

The opposition Democratic Unity coalition said Maria Aguirre died and another 75 people were injured – including five security officials – in chaotic scenes when National Guard troops sought to control a 5,000-strong crowd with teargas.

“Due to the shortage of food … the desperation is enormous,” local opposition politician Andres Camejo said, according to the coalition’s website. It published a photo of an elderly woman’s body lying inert on a concrete floor.

Camejo said thieves had also attacked the crowd, members of which were seeking to buy cheap food on offer at an outlet of the state’s Mercal supermarket chain in Barinas state.

Some American grocery stores have, for years now, used fingerprints or thumbprints to verify card purchases.

Right here in the Midwest but I have not been to those particular store.

The TV news was all about how it’s a good thing and not the Mark of the Beast.

It isn’t. Yet.

Thanks for the clarification. The TV news is too stupid to figure otherwise.

I hope the Media pays for the harm they’ve done to our country.

IIRC, beans are protein, rice, at least white rice, is carbohydrates.

Both good for a diet.

I’m sure brown rice has a few more properties.

All the big city stations seem liberal here in the Midwest.

They’ll probably all sign up for the Mark. That has its own guaranteed outcome. Life here and the lake of fire eternally.

As does refusing the Mark - that has a guaranteed outcome as well - death here and life eternally.

I’ve met people who laugh and scoff - they don’t think it will ever happen. I hate that it is, but it definitely will come. It is so prophesied in the Word of God.

I agree. Some say that Islam is the anti-Christ. It is possible.

Add rice to those beans and you have PROTEIN your body needs to function

A cup of rice is 4 grams protein, a cup of pinto beans provides over 15 grams of protein.

I’m growing my own spices.

The ones I use the most are perennials and will grow even here in NYS.

IIRC, beans are protein, rice, at least white rice, is carbohydrates.

You may need to add corn for the proper amino acid mix. Or just plant the Three Sisters.

"Civilization is more than just government."

Precisely. While a teenager in a suburb of a city that was 58% Hispanic (in light of so much crazy talk about race now), I survived a humdinger of a hurricane a long time ago. The buildings in the city were almost all single level. Most houses with brick veneers were leveled. Wood frame houses built for hurricanes were heavily damaged, and most had lost their roofs.

Many of the people who didn't have much to do with each other before the lights and phones went out for weeks did get to know each other pretty well afterward. Driving anywhere was nearly impossible at first and forbidden for weeks except for emergencies (poles, power lines and other debris in streets). One stranger walking down the street at night received the attention of two neighbors on watch, then the attention of most of those awake on the block. After being asked, he turned out to be someone walking home to another block after curfew (some sort of emergency expedition).

There were National Guard patrols in retail areas. The curfew was 6 pm, if I remember correctly. It wasn't martial law. But it was martial law, if you know what I mean. That's the way everyone wanted it. A mile or two away, there was a sign in front of a damaged store that said, "Looters will be shot." Still, to my knowledge, no one reacted with hysteria.

The sporadic looting was mostly over and done at the end of the first day. All in all, it was peaceful, even with no lights or phones for weeks.

Maybe a larger, more long lasting disaster could bring more violent crimes now, with meanness being more in style and all (see political speech, TV productions about disasters, etc.). Maybe fear, deprivation and violence would even be intense in some areas. But the violence still wouldn't last long, in my opinion. A look at the people around us should tell us that. On their couches and chairs, they're already tired.

Ever been on a plane with people of northwestern descent in heavy turbulence, where it feels like the plane is falling a long way and hitting something hard, the wings flapping almost like a bird's wings? It's very quiet. Most people of northwestern culture want to prove how calm and tough we are. It does not mean that we are "wimps" or that we are not prepared. We're just more quiet in uncertain circumstances, when noise is of no use.

Now I’m hungry. LOL That sounds really, really good.

Sometimes I’ll let some pinto beans simmer, dice some ham and put in with the beans and put it over the rice. A little shredded sharp cheddar cheese is good on top.

I’m off to find something.

Venezuela: A country blessed with natural resources (esp. oil) and some of the most beautiful geography and people on the planet.

All ruined by socialism.

And a large chunk of the American population is so stupid that they want that here.
