In Alabama, Trump’s Wizard of Oz Act Leaves Some Fans Underwhelmed

QUIN HILLYER

Toto the dog wasn’t needed in Mobile, Ala., Friday night to pull the curtain from behind The Great and Mighty Trump. Trump let his own curtain flutter open, showing to much of the audience the humbug within. In an hour-long verbal meanderthon at half-filled Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Trump allowed an atmosphere of electric excitement to dissipate, and then he split town without his promised post-show press conference.

As I left the stadium, a red-hatted lady of my acquaintance spotted me and pulled me aside, saying: “Somebody needs to tell that man when to shut the you-know-what up. People were leaving in droves.” Well, not entirely droves, but by my estimate, about 15–20 percent of the 18,000 or so attendees — Trump publicity organs had earlier said they expected up to 35,000 — had filed out before Trump wound up his many-versed hymn to his own toughness and deal-making skills.

The line of the evening belonged to Rob Holbert, a former press aide to Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi and now the co-publisher of the port city’s Lagniappe weekly. “That speech was more disjointed,” he said, “than a skeleton after tumbling down four flights of stairs.”

I listened to the whole speech. It was very good, very personable and impromptu.

The reason people were leaving, and DT alluded to it several times was because storms were brewing overhead ready to break at any moment. But the crowd was wildly enthusiastic and fired up throughout his speech.

Americans are drawn to DT like no other because he speaks plainly and says things they want to say. He is simply a voice of the people and that’s why he’s winning.

I’m hoping Trump flames out, and attention shifts back to Cruz.

But there’s no question, NR is at DEFCON ONE with regard to Trump.

The GOPe knows their bread is buttered by the same corporate elites as the Democrats.

Conservatives are the real threat to their pig’s trough.

My take, the crowd looked very bored, very catatonic before Trump arrived. Then when he arrived, they transitioned to just listless.

The first 1/3 of his speech was boring and standard Trump stuff. at the 2/3 mark he started getting interesting with by deviating. For the final third the speech was superb.

To get just a rough idea of the crowd in Alabama last night, click here at "http://static01.nyt.com/images/2015/08/23/us/23trump-JP-01-ALT/23trump-JP-01-ALT-master675.jpg" to see a photo of part of the crowd at Mobile last night.   (I don't believe we are allowed to post the actual photos from that source here, so you have to click on it to see it.   It is from the story at this link, posted by another FReeper at this link.)

I would if my preferred candidate doesn’t make it.

No matter what he does, he would have to be an improvement on the freak show we have now.

“Shorten it up Donald! Get yourself a good speech writer. Get someone out there for 15 minutes before to charge the crowd.
30 minutes max. Sooner shorter than that. Then spend the rest of the time with the crowd.”

Yeah, that’s the ticket. Have people come from all over the state and even out of state, spend a ton of time just getting in and then out of the stadium, and then give them a 15 to 30 minute speech. Right. And then deal with all of the people who will feel short changed and gypped for having heard a dinky little speech in return for all the time spent dealing with trying to attend it. Wrong. Give the folks their monies’ worth for heaven sakes. Trump understands this, you don’t.

"meanderthon" - that's the perfect description for Trump's speeches, or anytime answers an interviewer's question.

I watched this interminable speech. I was incredulous as how little he could say and still use so many words. If you take out all the "I's," "me's," "my's," etc., it would probably have been only 15 or 20 minutes long.

I was incredulous when he compared himself to Billy Graham right from the start. And I want to jump through the TV whenever he compares himself to Ronald Reagan. You're dreaming, dude.

From the email mentioned in the piece:

What happened with Trump? Why was he so late going on stage? Why did he cancel the press conference? Was he insulted by the turnout and had to be talked into going on stage and canceled the press conference because he didn’t want to justify the smaller crowd? Is he a petulant child?

I can't answer the first few questions, but the answer to the last one is easy: Of course he is! But then another question arises: Why can't otherwise intelligent people see that? I'm flummoxed.

Doesn't anybody find it disingenuous when Trump claims his favorite book is the Bible? Surely I'm not the only one who can see through that. How stupid does he think his audience is? [Don't answer that!] Let's not forget that he was the guy who reacted to the question of asking God for forgiveness as foreign concept. Talk about your deer-in-the-headlight looks! Anyone with any amount of discernment should have picked up on just who is god Donald Trump's life. And sisters and brothers, it's not the Lord God. But he just loves the Bible, y'all. Yep! Reads it daily and twice on Sunday.

If I didn't see it with my own eyes, no one could have convinced me that people would fall for this buffoonish manipulator. He flips. He flops. He'll tell his listeners whatever they want to hear to get them to fawn over him. It reminds me of the vulnerable woman who has had her heart broken too many times. Along comes a guy who senses her vulnerability and takes advantage of it, telling her whatever she so desperately needs to hear so that he can have his way with her. In her desperation she believes what he says. She has already begun to disrobe.

You can feel the hate in this article. I am sorry but even if Trump carried in a Confederate Flag I would still vote for him over Bush III and Hillary or anyone else out there.

If you spend all day waiting for a concert and he hand played for only third minutes, you’d be missed.

People don’t want substance, are you kidding me? We have a 2 term president who offered ZERO SUBSTANCE and the press made sure he didn’t have to give any... The only folks clamoring for substance are the political press, which is amusing considering they could have cared less about anything substantive from Obama in 2 elections.

I won’t pretend to know where this is all going to wind up, but if the GOP keeps pushing Jeb or Carly or Rubio, I’d say Trump will continue to roll over them all.

The political class is so disjointed and out of touch with the populace at this point, and the existing administration and republican leadership has been so completely inept he is going to get a huge leeway from the electorate because they literally can say, why the hell not? he can’t be any worse than the idiots on both sides of the isle have been for the last decade or more...

I like Cruz ideologically, but I am not convinced he can inspire and motivate the electorate to him. He can manage preaching to the choir but that’s the only going to get you 20-25% of the vote.

Next november is a long way away, who knows what the end game is, all I can personally say is this, if the Republican Party thinks I am going to walk into a voting booth and pull the lever for Jeb, Carly or Rubio they will be most disappointed on election day.

I only caught the last 15 or 20 minutes and it looks to me like he had the crowd eating out of his hand... the event was billed as a pep rally and it certainly seemed like he got them motivated.

yes it wasn’t a speech for the ages, it was just him speaking off the cuff... and as far as I can tell he excited the crowd, which is what a pep rally is for.

...“Democrats have opened our borders to all manner of horrific Third World violence, crime, and disease. The GOP has supported and endorsed this vile activity every single step of the way. Trump has tapped into the fury of the American people over the unrelenting anti-American NWO push of our paid employees in government. Trump could win this on this one issue alone. Americans are tired of being betrayed by their government on both sides of the aisle.”...

Conservatives will still be divided if Trump leaves, while the GOPe will unite behind Bush.
