Donald Trump Is an Affront to Anyone Devoted to William F. Buckley’s Legacy

Donald Trump, Counterfeit Republican By GEORGE WILL August 12, 2015

In every town large enough to have two traffic lights there is a bar at the back of which sits the local Donald Trump, nursing his fifth beer and innumerable delusions. Because the actual Donald Trump is wealthy, he can turn himself into an unprecedentedly and incorrigibly vulgar presidential candidate. It is his right to use his riches as he pleases. His squalid performance and its coarsening of civic life are costs of freedom that an open society must be prepared to pay.

When, however, Trump decided that his next acquisition would be not another casino but the Republican presidential nomination, he tactically and quickly underwent many conversions of convenience (concerning abortion, health care, funding Democrats, etc.). His makeover demonstrates that he is a counterfeit Republican and no conservative.

He is an affront to anyone devoted to the project William F. Buckley began six decades ago with the founding in 1955 of National Review — making conservatism intellectually respectable and politically palatable. Buckley’s legacy is being betrayed by invertebrate conservatives now saying that although Trump “goes too far,” he has “tapped into something,” and therefore

That's not what he said, he said either PP stops abortions and gets funding for the supposed other things they do to help women, or the continue doing abortions and get no funding at all.

One thing that really irritates me is that Trump says Reagan was a liberal and he himself was a conservative.

Reagan was a democrat but a 1940s/1950s democrat was still well to the right of most republicans of today and on the far side of the planet from Donald Trump.

And here's a list of ‘real’ Republicans...

Rep. Christopher Smith, Rep. Christopher Gibson, Rep. Michael Grimm, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, Rep. John Boehner, Rep. Richard Hanna, Rep. Justin Amash, Rep. Michael Burgess, Rep. Vern Buchanan, Rep. Jason Chaffetz....

Gosh, since Trump's only apparent real strengths, according to polling data, is a) being an outsider, b) economy, c) illegal immigration, d) different direction, and e) doesn't slink away or fall to his knees at every zinger from someone who is supposed to REPORT the news... The real question is, why isn't the National Review urging the candidates that they do actually support to come out and reclaim all these voters who are presently supporting Trump?

Ahh, right, because it is always far easier to attack someone than to be disappointed when your candidates wander towards a mike and mew quietly when you urge them to roar.

Just hope that Ted Cruz changes his campaign just slightly - it is really hard to engage people in other areas when you make your campaign appearances so exceedingly directed at the audience you're talking with.

Well, George, virtually all of the GOP are counterfeit republicans, and so are you for that matter, so I really can’t see what your issue with Trump is outside of the fact that he is beyond your control.
