Diversity in the MIT Department of Physics
MIT ^

Posted on 08/04/2015 5:25:17 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The MIT Physics Department is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and student populations to improve our excellence and to better serve the society that supports our work.

Like in many physics departments, white males are over-represented in our student and faculty populations. There are several reasons to pursue change, seeking to increase the number of women and under-represented minorities in our community:

Broadening the talent pool increases the talent. At MIT we constantly strive for excellence in everything we do. Our level of excellence will be improved if we sample from the most inclusive population.

Attracting more students keeps us vital.

The US needs more students trained in science. To walk our talk about education, we must be more inclusive.

A more inclusive atmosphere enhances the quality of life for everyone. Being a physicist is not easy. Improving the climate helps everyone be happier and more productive.

As the US becomes more diverse, we must evolve to remain relevant. White males are a decreasing minority in the US. The MIT mission statement calls us to serve the nation and the world.

“Bovine feces.” Nice! :)

I knew a nuclear physicist from MIT. White Jewish redhead! You’d better have a brain to go along with that minority status to pass those courses! Tough stuff!

The same applies when you have diversity in Baltimore. You get a murder rate the highest it has been in 50 years.

Not just our universities, have you seen your local public school staff and your postal employees?

Speculative at best.

How many white males do they have in their women’s studies department?

OK, it’s MIT, so maybe they don’t have one, but as a whole, men are underrepresented in higher ed in the 40-60 range (or worse). Tell them to shove that stat up their Title IX

Even “being a physicist isn’t easy” needs inspection.

Perhaps that should read; "getting a job in physics, isn't easy".

Should be even easier when MIT starts pumping out physicists on par with womyn's studies and protest puppetry experts

In other words sacrifice quality for diversity.

What is a "physicist"? That question needs to be answered, before we can get into the distinction between "being" one and "becoming" one.

FWIW, I hold a BS degree in physics ...

I posted this on another thread this morning:

Diversity is achieved only when the number of minority residents reaches the limit of the financial ability of white people to support them through involuntary taxation.

Clearly, I did not paint with a broad enough brush. In this case, the limiting factor will be having just enough whites and Asians to handle the teaching and clean up the messes in the labs.

“Broadening the talent pool increases the talent.”

Gee? I wonder how they are doing in Africa in these advanced studies and technologies? I don’t think they are doing very well because they don’t have enough whites working there...huh?

History will write a chapter in the future about the “dumbing down” of everything simply in the name of diversity.

Nature has taken its course and the cream has risen to the top...and it is white and yellow...not black or brown.

. . . said no white man who was concerned about his own career and his own mortgage and his own family. Or that of his son-in-law . . .

RE:”As the US becomes more diverse, we must evolve to remain relevant. “

The libs think tanks dream up these meaningless lines to support discrimination.
