Trump Fans, It’s Time for An Intervention

by JONAH GOLDBERG July 11, 2015

The following is Jonah Goldberg’s weekly “news”letter, the G-File. Subscribe here to get the G-File delivered to your inbox on Fridays. Dear Reader (and those of you with better things to do), There have been times in the past when I’ve gotten crosswise with certain segments of the conservative base and/or with the readership of National Review. And, because, like the Elephant Man, I am a not an animal but a human being, I have always had at least some self-doubt. That’s as it should be.

People who share principles should not only hear each other out when they disagree; they should be able to see each other’s points and hold open the possibility that one’s opponents have the better argument. This is not one of those times, at least not for me. I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake.

I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. I’m watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage.

Like I said, not deporting is vastly different than amnesty. He never said ‘legalizing’ them. Stop posting lies. If you want to prove me wrong, post a link where he says that he will give them amnesty.

Cut off the benefits, cut off the jobs

That is how you do it.

........................

E-Verify needs to be mandated for all US jobs! All US benfits should be restricted to US citizens and a strong e-verify put into place.

This is the position of Senator Ted Cruz, by the way

Thanks for some common sense, which is a rare thing on FR lotus threads.

If Steinle’s killer had a job, Trump says he can stay!
.............

Trump is inconsistent and that is putting it mildly.

Trump says illegals stealing American jobs (another law broken) should be allowed to stay. That is insane.

Senator Ted Cruz wants a strong e-verify and he wants benefits only for US citizens. This is exactly the right approach.

Trump says illegals who break the law, again, and get jobs can stay.

Senator Ted Cruz says E-Verify all jobs and restrict US benefits to US citizens.

These positions are not “mirrors” of each other.

He never said ‘legalizing’ them.

Actually, yes he did. He said "people here illegally should have "a road to legal status". That means he is for ‘legalizing’ them, aka, amnesty.

He said that they would get in line to becoming a legal immigrant. It’s a front door approach championed be Ted Cruz. It is NOT amnesty.

Amen. Trump may have his flaws, but so do the rest of the field. I am still a Cruz man but I love that Trump is calling out all these PC RINOs and making them insane. I don’t think Trump wins but he might open the door for Cruz.

You come down on Trump for taking both sides,
but apparently forgot that Sen. Cruz voted for, and enabled,
ObamaTRADE, and that is a “mirror”
of his alleged conservative position.

All facinating. Trump is putting it on the line. I have seen all the interviews, the press conference, everything.

I’ve read information regarding his early political views and having balanced that against his current stance believe Trump did and said what he needed to do and say to succeed in business.

My eyes are wide open, but I’m hopeful he is sincere.

On imigration, he is telling the truth and telling it loudly. He called the press dishonest to their face and showed some their due disrespect at the press conference. That was remarkable and the first time I have ever heard any politician do it in my life.

Time will tell.

It is vastly more plausible that he is a stalking horse for his dear friend Hillary Clinton than he is a sincere conservative.”

Anything's possible, I suppose, but I doubt Hillary's fear is any of the many republican pretenders and contenders.

As far as Hillary is concerned, at this point whatever the republicans are saying and doing is like watching a game show.

If he wanted to help his dear friend Hillary, Trump needs to take on Bernie Sanders for her. He's the one stealing Hillary's lunch money and ticket to November.

Speculations aside, someone/something needed to do what Trump is doing and for that I'm grateful.

I also tend to believe that Trump follows his own plans to meet his own goals, not Hillary's.

Whatever. Our boring, tired old political soap opera finally has a new writer and the comedy and drama, and the ratings, haven't been this good for a very long time.

You said earlier Trump wasn't trying to legalize the ILLEGAL invaders. You did, in fact, say this: He never said ‘legalizing’ them.

Now you're saying he wants them to get in line to become "get in line to becoming a legal immigrants".

You seem confused in your defense of your lifelong liberal candidate.

Trump is a pompous ass who would be a disaster as POTUS. Not however as big a disaster as Obama has been.

Trump has put them on retreat, and he’s “keeping up the skeer.” If Pauly Shore had the devil on retreat, I would stand with him. Because that’s where the fight is, and if he falls someone has to be standing there to hold the ground.

The line of scrimmage is here. It used to be there. It moved because of Trump, period.
