Trump Fans, It’s Time for An Intervention

by JONAH GOLDBERG July 11, 2015

The following is Jonah Goldberg’s weekly “news”letter, the G-File. Subscribe here to get the G-File delivered to your inbox on Fridays. Dear Reader (and those of you with better things to do), There have been times in the past when I’ve gotten crosswise with certain segments of the conservative base and/or with the readership of National Review. And, because, like the Elephant Man, I am a not an animal but a human being, I have always had at least some self-doubt. That’s as it should be.

People who share principles should not only hear each other out when they disagree; they should be able to see each other’s points and hold open the possibility that one’s opponents have the better argument. This is not one of those times, at least not for me. I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake.

I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. I’m watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage.

I don't want Trump to be POTUS, but I am forever grateful to him for blowing up the GOP-wing of the Democrat Party, and he is doing it at personal sacrifice.

Illegal immigration is the most pressing issue facing this country. You can't have a country without borders. The GOP-wing of the Democrat Party would never have addressed this issue without being forced to by him.

I am not a fan of Trump but I am enjoying immensely the discomfiture his entry has caused most of the other candidates. That they would rather be silent, or worse, on the invasion and he has called them to task for it is a good thing. This conversation needs to be had before we start voting.

This is true. He’s highlighted this issue even though as Jonah’s article brilliantly essays his contradictions on all these issues including the fact that he once promoted amnesty and was a tool of NARAL.

I’m not the Jonah Goldberg fan, but I agree with the assessment:

“The amazing thing is that Trump is both a RINO and a CINO. I’m sure he has some authentic and sincere conservative views down in there somewhere. But the idea that he’s more plausibly conservative — or more loyally Republican — than Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Scott Walker, or any of the others is just flatly absurd. It is vastly more plausible that he is a stalking horse for his dear friend Hillary Clinton than he is a sincere conservative.”

Apparently Jonah doesn’t think that you (and I) are capable of making those distinctions. The Donald is forcing a conversation that the pubbies are too timid to broach. Of course when the rubber meets the road that timidity means that even should The Donald prevail, he won’t have any backing to actually accomplish anything he advocates.

No matter how you cast the bones, the future’s pretty bleak.

You may be onto something. While he’s bring to the fore a sore issue with voters, this may be major distraction from Ted Cruze, the Iran deal, and the gay marriage controversy.

Jonah Girlyman is right on this one

Trump, with his own mouth, has said the opposite of the things he is saying now.

Jonah, your mother was/is a true conservative.
What caused you to sell out to the leftist media?

He still favors amnesty for the illegals who are illegally stealing American jobs, he says those who are working can stay.

This is not an old position, this is his NEW position

Amen...he is quite likely the quintessential Clinton Pied Piper and strawman-tool.

More charisma and bravado than Perot...same strategy.

Beware, my conservative friends.

I was thinking the same thing.

We are being conned by Trump. Are you kidding me? We are being conned by the Republicans, The intervention should be to rid us of them.

Ask Kathryn Steinle’s parents what they think of Trump. It is amazing how all these anti-Trump factions are so willing to view the Kathryn Steinle’s of the world as collateral damage not worth fretting over. Simply amazing.

Trump the flake, the clown is the only one willing to take this level of abuse. He has all my respect not this clown Jonah who couldn’t care less about Kathryn!

I see this immigration problem (illegal & legal) as a killer for the USA. I believe Trump would address it if elected, but I’m not a single issue voter Where does he stand on abortion, guns and many other important issues? What’s the whole Trump package?

Not deporting is not the same thing as amnesty. Many GOPe-ers are falsely claim he is for amnesty, which is a lie. His position on this mirrors that of Ted Cruz.

Sorry, and it doesn’t seem popular on FR, but I like Trump. I look at the rest and I see career politicians...lord knows we have tried that...even tried the community organizer type...didn’t work. So I want someone that understands economies and jobs..and someone who is A$$hole enough to FIRE the EPA and welfare slackers. Not sure I want him for a friend, next door neighbor, or dinner partner...but wouldn’t be worried about him being the one to tell Putin to get the hell out of the Ukraine, tell Iran to stop with the bomb research or be bombed back to the Stone Age they never seem to have left. He isn’t perfect, none are, but I think we need some kicka$$ and I don’t see that in the rest of the field.

Nope.

Trump says if an illegal gets an illegal job (because that’s now breaking 2 laws at least) they can stay.

E-Verify is out the window I guess.

“Come and take Americans jobs away!” he is saying

Trump, with his own mouth, has said the opposite of the things he is saying now.

And I take it you have done something for years and then found a better way to do it and changed. That is changing your mind with better information. Wake up! We all change our minds upon receiving better info. I would rather have a person that can do it than an ars that no matter what sticks to his old ways. Open minds!!!!!!!
