The Deluded World of Air Conditioning.
Slate ^ | July 9 ,2015 | William Saletan

Posted on 07/09/2015 5:54:38 AM PDT by lbryce

Have you heard the news? Scientists have found a planet that can support life. Its atmosphere is too hot for year-round habitation, its gases impede breathing, and surface conditions are sometimes fatal. But by constructing a network of sealed facilities, tunnels, and vehicles, humans could survive on this planet for decades and perhaps even centuries.

The planet is called Earth.

Will Saletan writes about politics, science, technology, and other stuff for Slate. He’s the author of Bearing Right.

If you've seen this planet lately, you know what's going on: temperature records shattering, scores of Americans dead. By summer's end, the toll will be in the hundreds. It's not as bad as 2003, when a heat wave killed 30,000 people in Europe. But according to global-warming forecasts, within 40 years, every other summer will be like that one.

This is the same post I left at Slate to the author himself

Air conditioning. Now that's a first. People like you never seem to run out of things to demonize. In the age of same sex marriage and Hillary Clinton, Air conditioning has become a bad thing. Has Global Warming run its course? ISIS isn't as politically incorrect, as coool, as air conditioning? Just like when we found out about Algore's huge carbon footprint, Leonardo Di Caprio literally adding tons of pollutants into the air on his whirlwind tour to help save the planet, now this guy starts to pick on air conditioning. What a cheap shot. What a liar. In counties in Europe that traditionally don't have air conditioning during a heat wave a few yeas back hundreds of people died as a result.. But they were old, anyway. Taking up space and not being productive.

I called Mr. Saletan a liar because I'd bet 100 times what his accumulative air conditioning bill is going to be by September that would surely make a fool of him with his excessive use of the monster that air conditioning is.

There are so many subjects to write about, real issues, human suffering, but this guy is looking for something really rad, something really bad, politically incorrect, bad.

Toilet paper? Why don't you do a story on toilet paper?

There are so many things about toilet paper that is considered politically incorrect, But I suppose it would be difficult to criticize that which is the soucre of one's livlihood.

Such a hypocrite. Imagine the B.O. from his liberal rag’s office if they didn’t have AC.

You call Mr. Saletan a liar. I call him a complete and utter idiot.

He writes: "Two months ago, we saw Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth. Walking out of the air-conditioned theater, we agonized over what we could do to fight global warming."

If Mr. Saletan had lived in Germany in the 1930's after reading Adolph Hitler's book, Mien Kampf, he would have agonized over what he could do to help der fuhrer in his struggle.

If air conditioning is indeed so eeevil, then We the People should demand that our leaders set an example by turning off, and permanently removing, AC units in all government buildings, including the Capitol and White Hut, as well as their private residences.

Air conditioning is evil.

Without air conditioning fewer productive Americans would have been able to flee the Democrat controlled tax and spend utopias of the Northeast for the conservative states of the South.

Socialism is difficult when you run out of other people’s money to spend.

Back during Bubba's presidency, during a big heat wave in the south, didn't he spend a few million to help poor people buy air conditioners?

Wonder if that program is still going in..

So he wants to kill people when heat waves happen?
His office and his computer and the server where the companies stories are stored are being cooled by a/c.

Wiki: energy can be neither created nor destroyed. However, energy can change forms, and energy can flow from one place to another.

The writer though has proven that he lacks common sense.

Besides, Hitler, Stalin,Pol Pot, FDR all loved air-conditioning. Is it proper, is it defensible for any of us in an enlightened age of moral renaissance that which political correctness brought forth, to indulge oneself in that which men of this ilk found pleasurable, comforting, while the huge masses suffered in sweltered sleepless humidity ?

They hate AC because it’s allowed the South to catch up economically with the North.

I grew up in Houston without air conditioning. We had no idea how miserable we were. We found a shady spot and took a nap.

Now if any glowbull warming moron try’s to take my thermostat from my hot sweaty hands they are going to have a fight!

The thing is that air conditioning in the form of refrigeration is the biggest thing to safeguard our food supply ever. It makes it possible to ship food thousands of miles and reduces the issue of food spoilage.

You could contact Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio and tell them to stop flying around in jets all over the world. The hot exhaust from the jet engines is heating up the planet!

I grew up in SC farm country and it seemed very few people had AC until the early 80s except for some window units.

Air Conditioning HAS changed our way of life. Not the atmosphere or pollution of the air but our lifestyles.

It’s nothing dangerous but has impacted our lives tremendously when it comes to even knowing who your neighbor is.

Back in time when I was a boy air conditioning was only for the very rich. In the evenings during the summer it was so hot in our homes (South Texas) that everyone sat outside in the yard or on the front porch to “air the house out” which meant all windows were open so the afternoon breeze could cool the house until it was cool enough to even go inside.

With this in mind, everyone outside got to know their neighbors who came to visit or who walked down the street in the evening. You knew everyone, from their kids to anyone living in the house.

Air conditioning destroyed that way of life and now most people only know who is living next to them and very little else. It’s a shame because crime was down simply because everyone knew everyone else and a stranger in the neighborhood was instantly noticed and watched.

Those days are gone, never to come back again.

Same here in the DC area during the fifties. Parents would chat with neighbors outside and we kids would be chasing lighting bugs.

Now many kids don’t seem to have any idea what lightning bugs are.

Another small, but lasting, joy denied.
