Need Help identifying this Hawk/Raptor ~ Vanity

Posted on 06/21/2015 6:09:41 PM PDT by GraceG

So across my street there is Hawk or big Raptor type bird that lives in a tree, well this spring it had some hatch-lings and now they are flying around the nearby house shrieking and raising a ruckus, think the momma bird tossed them out of the nest as they can now fly. Wondering if any freeples out there have any idea what sort bird this is, I managed to get some up close pics of them. I need a few questions answered.

1. Will they damage my property?

2. Will they kill the squirrels that actually do damage my property?

3. If #1 is no, and #2 is yes, is there anyway to entice them to stay?

photo DSC01184copy_zps0b54066b.jpgI saw this one in the morning in front of the house. He was eating a possum which had been run over that night.

I agree, it’s a Peregrine. Lucky, lucky person!

It’s not a red-tail, cooper’s or swainson’s.

The markings, deep leg feather coverage (and markings thereon) and posture make me think Peregrine.

You should probably get a better camera. You can get one with a long zoom range and anti shake mechanism for not that much.
If money is not important get one of the newe 50mp Canons which have just come out.

Seems unanimous so far. It’s a bird.

I am almost positive that is a Prairie Falcon, but could POSSIBLY be a Peregrin Falcon and they both would not hesitate to take a squirrel. Not a common sight so you are very lucky to see this, as are WE now.

When you see feathered legs like that and not bare legs, it's most often a FALCON!

Yup.

Two years ago or so I was going down the hill towards the valley and had to swerve in the road to avoid hitting an eagle doing that. He was so big it took like 6 steps to get off the ground!

And when I mentioned it here there were those who insisted “eagles don’t eat dead animals, they’re hunters...” yada yada...

Someone should tell the eagles!

;-)

Immature red-tailed hawk. They don’t pose any threat to your property, and they will prey on squirrels. Since you already have a nesting population, not much more you can do except protect them from your neighbors.

Red-Tailed Hawks are a main-stay in American falconry, the species are incredible survivors...

Well I guess the eagle could have been driving the car which ran over the possum.

A Peregrine in CO would have a slate-blue back. You photographed a Prairie Falcon, which is brown with creme-colored breast, brown spots and streaks. Dark facial marks are more slender on a Prairie Falcon than on the Peregrine.
