Donald Trump Want’s [sic] Americans to Pay a 35% Tax on New Cars

Donald Trump wants to run for president. He says he can beat Hillary. Sometimes Donald Trump has something good things to say, and sometimes he makes me shake my head in disbelief.

...

Here is one of Trump’s economic solutions. “He said Ford and other companies looking to move manufacturing to Mexico or overseas should face a 35 percent tax when they ship the goods back to the U.S. That would bring the plants back home, he argued. ‘That’s what’s going to happen, and there are hundreds, thousands of those deals,’ he said. ‘I will make this country so rich – if I run on the 16th [of June] – just you watch.’”

The first question I would ask Mr. Trump is why companies would spend so much money moving their factories overseas. The answer is simple: it’s cost effective. Why is it cost effective? Because the corporate income tax in the United States is so high when compared to other countries that the cost of goods would be lower and Americans would actually get a better deal. “At 35%, the United States has the highest nominal top corporate tax rate in any of the world’s developed economies.”

It seems to me, instead of threatening to tax corporations 35%, Mr. Trump should work to lower the corporate income tax. Not only would this lower the cost of manufacturing, it would lower the cost of goods for all Americans.

That was Trump’s point. This is what he would have done to stop it. He also says he will bring manufacturing back to the U.S..

Trump’s 35% tax would be if Ford kept the manufacturing and the jobs in Mexico, not if they had the manufacturing and jobs in the U.S..

FWIW how does a pickup made mostly in Mexico and Canada have a list price of over $55,000?

Pickup and SUVs have to have high profit margins to make up for high mpg small cars that earn no or little profit.

The rule of thumb is it takes 30 man hours of labor to build a car in a modern factory. So using slaves/robots can only save so much of the retail price per vehicle.

Ford’s Fusion is built in Mexico for the US market, or at least it was until this year.

Hell I would sell my land if they wanted to build right on my property. I guess you never see what goes on in less populated rural areas. Kids grow up and the smart ones go away to college, never to return. The less gifted have very little to do. Most leave. Some actual eek out a living. A lot turn to drugs and welfare. The bottom line is you never see you kids as adults and grand children are just photographs. Then we call the younger generation lazy on top of it. Sad.

So factories may be ugly but they are the wealth creation engines that hold communities to together. So not everyone is as myopic as some gloBULLists.

Had a 2000 Focus, European specs, when I lived in Spain. Damn thing was a rocket ship and held the road better the faster I went ... and I routinely drove 100 mph plus on the highways.

Sure wish I could have brought it back here.

I rented more than a few of them from Hertz. Loved ‘em. The 2015 has been “softened up,” sad to say. (Although I drive on Michigan roads, so I shouldn’t complain very much).

For the VERY SHORT ATTENTION SPAN idiot journalist - he said he'd charge a 35% tax on new cars built at the proposed plant in MEXICO, because Ford is building it there, rather than Tennessee.

I wouldn't call Trump a RINO either, but he does have his own agenda. As long as a large part of that overlaps with mine, I'd welcome him in the debates and maybe we can get onto substantial issues and meanigful (non-gobbledegook) answers.

I'd rather have a firm, definitive answer I don't agree with at all than one I don't understand or is ambivalent.

Love him or hate him , he will say things that many think but in this era of just get the vote won’t ever utter.

His positions will be normal negotiations. Toughest as the starter, and then work the real deal...

One thing for sure he won’t be $$$$ beholden to anyone.
