Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker leads a tight field of candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, according to a new survey from Public Policy Polling.
Walker is alone in first place in the poll with 17 percent, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 15 percent, Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) at 13 percent, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson at 12 percent and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 11 percent.
That’s a big jump for Bush, who was at 11 percent support in the same poll last month.
However, Bush will begin his quest for the GOP nomination with a negative favorability rating among Republicans, according to the poll. Only 37 percent said they have a positive view of Bush, against 40 percent who have a negative view.
Bush is dragged down by those who identify as “very conservative,” with only 32 percent of those saying they have a positive view of Bush. Bush is the top choice among self-described “moderate” Republican primary voters.
Rubio stands out among the top tier of candidates for having the best favorability rating in the field. Fifty-nine percent of GOP primary voters said they have a positive view of Rubio, compared to only 16 percent who have a negative view.
The rest of the candidates polled in single digits nationally. Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rand Paul (Ky.) took 8 percent support each in the poll, businesswoman Carly Fiorina took 5 percent, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie won 4 percent support.
Christie has the worst favorability rating in the entire field, with only 26 percent of Republicans saying they have a favorable view of him, compared 49 percent who view him unfavorably.
On the Democratic side, former secretary of State Hillary Clinton continues to be the runaway leader.
She takes 65 percent support, followed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) at 9 percent, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley at 5 percent and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and Jim Webb (Va.) with 4 percent support each.
Clinton leads all of the Republicans in head-to-head match-ups, with Rubio and Carson coming the closest, trailing the former secretary of State by three points each.
Clinton leads Walker, Bush and Christie by four, Huckabee by five, Cruz and Fiorina by six, and Paul by seven points.
The PPP survey of 1,129 voters nationwide was conducted between June 11 and June 14 and has a 2.9 percentage point margin of error.
Hillary does not look so formidable any more.
Those numbers look legit, despite the source. How Trump runs (and spends) can be a bit of a wild card, those less effective in Iowa and New Hampshire than in bigger states with open primaries.
As things now look, I expect Christie to bail after a weak showing in New Hampshire. Carson may be a problem, as he could finish second or third in Iowa, making him a story, and draining % away from better candidates. He also doesn’t need as much $$$ to stay active, just enough to get on ballots and in debates.
Cruz is keeping his powder dry, as is Walker. Neither wants to be any more of a target than absolutely necessary. If Jeb is near the lead, it also makes for a more compelling fund-raising pitch.
Herself, Madame Benghazi, the Cold & Joyless, is already feeling pressure from the left, as Bernie Sanders keeps dragging the dialogue further and further into the fever swamps.
Now, since fever swamps are the natural habitat of trolls and ogres, tactically this may not be a bad thing for Herself to prep for the primary campaign. But Herself has to, sooner rather than later, actually have to start ANSWERING the questions that are thrown out at press conferences, but continue to be squelched either by a quick exit, or deliberate and very obvious snubs to the one who chose to make such a dire breach of etiquette, offending every tenet of deference to royalty.
Bernie has no such aversion to conversing with the press people.
Governor Walker is looking pretty good!

fray and become a candidate.
True. I can really see him picking up a lot of blue collar Dems and indies in open primaries, especially if Hillary has it sewn up early.
If true, the GOP might as well get ready for Hitlery.

With the confusion at the organizational level for Carson, I have a hard time buying that he is running so well.
Polls at this point, before even the first debate, are MSM 'fill the time and inches', in other words USELESS!
So, you want a guy at the top who supports TPP, the Patriot Act, flips on immigration and has ethical issues WEDC in WS?
I like Walker, but just asking.
Really good points on Walker. I also am not buying the polls on Carson. I can’t get excited by someone who absolutely puts me to sleep when he speaks. Good person, just not Presidential.
We must never allow a BUSH/WALKER ticket.

carson had lots of boots on the ground at the GA GOP state convention.
Walker is my choice, but Bush is trainable...get rid of common core and I can handle him...he is a Catholic which means pro-life and anti same sex marriage...He has been a great governor in Florida, fiscally responsible and has a great rapport with the Hispanics.....
Now if somebody can just force him to announce. :-)

does that also mean, if Bush is elected, he will also be making climate change one of his top agenda’s for his first year in office, as the Pope seems to be very concerned about climate change?
