Whom would you pick to moderate the Republican debates?

The surprising thing isn't that George Stephanopoulos donated to Hillary's charity/slush fund and didn't tell anyone about it. The really surprising thing is that Republicans continue to pick debate moderators who are clearly liberals. Regardless of whom George did or did not donate to, we know what side he's on.

My radical suggestion is to pick debate moderators who are either conservatives or clearly impartial, who won't ask gotcha questions akin to "Why do Republicans hate the poor?"

Here is my list of suggested moderators:

1) Mark Levin. He's very tough on his radio show, but when he interviews people he's a gentleman, and he knows more than most people have forgotten.

2) Brit Hume/Bret Baier. Both scholarly, thoughtful journalists who won't ask "when did you stop beating your wife" questions.

“The RNC will select the DNC’s choices.”

Exactly. They will male a show of a little harrumphing when the DNC announces that, say, Katrina VandenHooters of The Nation will “moderate”, but then the Weeper, Twitch & Co. will drop their pants and bend over.

Conservatives should announce that we are holding debates and the Uniparty and their MSM is welcome to send its candidates and Hobbit George Stephapopadopolous.

A former Freeper “NotChosenName” aka John Lofton if he hadn’t passed away last year would have been perfect for outing RINO’s. And as Cripplecreek said why should the media control it? Get John Bolton or someone who would ask tough questions on issues that Conservatives should be able to answer easy enough and make the RINO’s squirm. Hannity? From FOX News show host I can only think of one person. He host “The Five” but I can’t think of his name.

I don’t remember why “moderators” are needed at all.

How about asking each candidate to deliver a short speech — without a teleprompter — that describes four or five serious issues and describes what the candidate would do to resolve them?

Such as....”The ISIS caliphate? I’d bomb every single gathering of more than 3 of those so-called “fighters” until their fragments surrender....”

Hugh Hewitt is a pretty good interviewer. I think he’d make a decent debate host.

I would rather the “debate” format render the moderator almost irrelevant. Proposal:

1) Produce a series of 7 debates, each to last 3 hours.
2) Select one topic of great national import for each debate, as proposed by a commission, but approved mutually by the campaigns. Economy & Employment. Immigration Policy. Health Care (How best to provide it and how to pay for it). Fiscal Policy & Debt. Foreign Policy. The Proper Role of Government.
3) Moderator does 5 minute intro, tosses a coin to see who starts.
4) First candidate speaks uninterrupted for 40 minutes; second candidate speaks uninterrupted for 40 minutes.
5) Candidates then have 2 rounds of 10 minutes each to rebut each other. That leaves 45 minutes.
6) For the next 30 minutes, Candidates ask each other questions. 3 minutes max for questions, 5 minutes maximum for answers.
7) Candidates have 10 minutes each for a closing statement.
8) Other 5 minutes gets used up for closing TY by moderator, shaking hands at the end, etc.
9) Moderator can only intercede for timing violations, and to stop grandstanding while asking questions.
10) No teleprompters, no audience reaction shots, no clapping for favorite demagogues, no running commentary across the bottom of the screen.
11). Broadcast cartoons or a talent show rerun in an inset to retain an audience.

Performing puppets would be exposed for what they are.

Now that would draw a large male audience, I second the motion.

They used to kinda keep the debates honest. In these times having a main stream media reporter ask questions usually means in the case of the GOP the DEM's are asking the questions on their issues and focusing the GOP away from it's own issues and platform. The RINO Libs don't mind but it hurts Conservatives.

Moderating would work better with cut off timers on the Mics. And yes let the candidates ask each other the questions.

Dennis Praeger - He’s not a wonk, but he’d ask a number of thought provoking questions. Would be nice to have a non-wonk debate.

Someone mentioned Hugh Hewitt - I like his interview style and concur, I worry he leans establishment so only gets one in the series, with more conservative moderators like Mark Levin for other debates.

I thought about Bill Bennett - but as with Hugh he’s too establishment so I’d rather have Hugh since he does more intense questioning.

For the state the debate is held in have the repub chair and a recognized local tea party organizer co-chair a debate. In Ohio I know I’d like to see Tom Zawatowski (spelling) in there as the Tea Party guy.
