Why is America celebrating the beating of a black child?
Washington Post ^ | 04/29/2015 | By Stacey Patton

Posted on 04/30/2015 5:35:02 PM PDT by Rusty0604

It’s not surprising that a black mother in Baltimore who chased down, cursed and beat her 16-year-old son in the middle of a riot has been called a hero. In this country, when black mothers fulfill stereotypes of mammies, angry and thwarting resistance to a system designed to kill their children, they get praised.

“He gave me eye contact,” Toya Graham told CBS News. “And at that point, you know, not even thinking about cameras or anything like that — that’s my only son and at the end of the day, I don’t want him to be a Freddie Gray. Is he the perfect boy? No he’s not, but he’s mine.”

In other words, Graham’s message to America is: I will teach my black son not to resist white supremacy so he can live.

The kind of violent discipline Graham unleashed on her son did not originate with her, ...or with the legions of black parents who equate pain with protection and love. The beatings originated with white supremacy, a history of cultural and physical violence that devalues black life at every turn. From slavery through Jim Crow, from the school-to-prison pipeline, the innocence and protection of black children has always been a dream deferred.

Praising Graham distracts from a hard truth: It doesn’t matter how black children behave – whether they throw rocks at the police, burn a CVS, join gangs, walk home from the store with candy in their pocket, listen to rap music in a car with friends, play with a toy gun in a park, or simply make eye contact with a police officer – they risk being killed and blamed for their own deaths because black youths are rarely viewed as innocent or worthy of protection.

Think progressive adults like the author also need to be slapped upside the head a few times. They are nothing but adult children who never matured.

Why? Because she’s a mother who, apparently, actually wants to do her job the best she can under the circumstances.

That is rare.

Because it was not a beating.

It was a few slaps.

And he was not a child. He was early teens at the youngest.

Old enough to think that he could go act like an adult.

His mother reminded him that she was the adult. He was the child.

Why is Stacey Patton opening her stupid thug yap about someone else's children?

Does she want children to grow up to be thugs like her, and people like her?

Mom loved me with all her heart. I was holding her hand when she died. I got her right hook when I was 18 and thought my mouth could challenge her. That kid didn’t get beat. He should have stood there and taken her mothering.

Yes Stacy, we’d be better off celebrating the black youth burning entire cities down with innocent people inside buildings wouldn’t we?

Idiots like you are the reason this country will burn.

Beat?

I Googled the author. Appears to be in her late 20’s or early 30’s. She has no idea how previous generations were raised. Between my mom and dad I got whopped upside the head so much worse than this punk/thug and DESERVED it every damned time. It’s what’s missing in today’s world.

Because it was not a beating.

Nowhere near the beating an abortion would have been. I wonder what the author thinks of that.

People are celebrating a mother being a parent.

Exactly the way I've looked at this.

The fact that the WaPo gives this person a platform to spout such inanities says all you need to know about the state of “journalism.”

A 16 yo male rioting is not a “child”.

And a 16 yo male getting smacked a couple of times by his mother is not get “beaten”.

lefties in academia are such melodramatic drama queens.

I will teach my black son not to resist white supremacy so he can live. ............................ I can’t put enough LOLs here. Crap, I grew up during the end of the great depression. If I screwed up, wham!smack! ouch! my dad was fond of his garrison belt, and it wasn’t a case of white supremacy. It always was spare the rod and spoil the child.

Stacy is another delusional black liberal racist reporter looking to stir up the pot while she enjoys her high style life living in a nice apartment and probably drives a new Toyota. Did she get there all by herself? Or were there white supremacists teaching her from grade school to college? She’s not alone, I had worked with quite a few of this type who complained, but were still climbing the ladder of success in the white world.

It was NOT a “beating”.

It was discipline fitting the circumstances.

A foreign concept to our “no consequences” culture.

Killing and looting...cool.

Family discipline...out of bounds.

How are these people in charge?

Honest, it's a mystery to most of us... I have no clue.

The woman’s son was doing something illegal, stupid and dangerous. IF the city had been enforcing the law at that time, he could have been arrested and charged with a crime that would probably have carried a few months in jail.

In saner times, what the mother did would have been called “knocking some sense into him”. She did exactly the right thing and those calling it a beating or abuse are PC fools.
