A smarter Walmart now closes store for “plumbing problems” not union rules and still wins

The budding “revolutionary guards” among WalMart employees may be learning a lesson about economics in the real world; a course they were never offered during their substandard public educations.

The pressure from militant employees and union thugs has brought about a series of raises for WalMart workers, which is supposed to be good news. But is it?

Some of these raises will start immediately and others will follow until all REMAINING workers will see remarkable increases in their salaries; some will be getting $80 per week raises.

Nevertheless, WalMart has not become the largest retailer in the world by voluntarily shrinking its own already razor thin profit margin. The “hard fought – hard won” raises have a price tag that will be paid by some of the very “revolutionaries” who fought so hard for them.

Since the new pay structure was announced, WalMart has experienced an outbreak of “faulty plumbing” in some of its stores. These suspiciously handy “plumbing failures” have necessitated closing at least five stores due to “ongoing plumbing issues that will require extensive repairs.” A review of the listed stores shows that one, in Pico Rivera California, has been the scene of ongoing employee work stoppages and picketing.

During the widely reported incidents, a worker was...

I could envision a system where you put it on a conveyor belt and there are SKU readers that will automatically scan it no mater what it’s position and then you just have a sacker. The rest of the transaction is just like the self check outs.

And the other four? What's the reason behind them?

Many years ago we had a sewing plant and they voted to unionize here in our small town. Yep, they closed the plant.

It happened in the mines around here too. So many good jobs lost. The mines were dealing with environmentalists, fed/gov, low prices and greedy unions so they just closed down for many years.

At the wholesale club I go to, you have to stop your cart on the way out and a person looks over your receipt and the cart. One person in that job instead of six or seven cashiers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these Wal*Marts reopened with
some kind of streamlined checkout procedure.

You don’t have self check out at you local walmarts?

I can’t imagine the one in Midland, Texas, or the Oklahoma ore being closed for union difficulties. Were any of the stores closed as sacrificial lambs or as warning to other employees in other locations?

Could be an experiment. These are all long-established stores, probably with employees that have been around for a while and have worked their way to a point above the $9 rate Walmart is starting people out at. So close the store, dump the staff, replace them in 6 months with cheaper people, and reopen the store. Walmart isn't going to take a hit in sales because all these places have other stores near by. If this works then you could see an epidemic of plumbing problems.

Our Sam’s Club is that way..but at Wally World, the entrances and exits are swarming with parents with their anchor babies, and of course the strollers which can hide a ton of gear.

Remember Firestone? The old Firestone. Labor dispute. Employees sabotaged some tires. Cars crashed and people died. Ford Explorers. Remember how Firestone gave in? That’s because they didn’t. They shut the plant down.

Be careful when all you have to offer the world is your labor.

When I have to pay for Wal-Mart employee's healthcare and food stamps, you betcha I got a problem with it...A big problem...And since you don't have a problem with it, why don't you volunteer to pay my share...

Appears it could be a lot of things. But it does appear that Wally World’s Board came up with an excuse that will at least keep them out of the government cross hairs for now, at least on the union versus non-union issue. Will be interesting to watch it unfold.

And if/when the excuse turns out to be so much bullsh*t then what cross hairs will be on Walmart then?

Don’t you pay this pretty much anywhere you shop? And if you’re shopping at place that pays much higher wages, wouldn’t you just be paying more for the products they sell?

I could take any Walmart here in Phoenix, with any type of underslab “plumbing” issue and have it up and running in less than two weeks, permits and all. I’ll give it three weeks to include restocking (which would only be necessray for perishable items, but thats on the outside of duration limit) First of all, you don’t close it till the permits are ready, unless it’s a colapse. If not a colapse, but a problem drain, I’d still have time to line a a three bid contract prior to closing. The work would go on 24/7, cause every day is lost revenue. This “plumbing” problem story is the weekest cover, ever.

McDonalds are francise stores owned by individuals...not company owned stores like Walmart.

Big difference!

Obummer's NLRB is doing their best to fix that.
