Brain teaser. Mystery quote by famous lawman.
April 16, 2015 | Self

I'm quite partial to the old-fashioned sentiment expressed by this lawman. Who said this? Major kudos to whoever knows correct answer. It's not an easy one.

Hint #1: "Go west, young man." -Horace Greeley

Hint #2: In his day, police were commonly known as peace officers.

Hint #3: His officers would have cruised in cars like this one.

"Good evening, friends. In dealing with the public, the average policeman finds that every man has an inherent spark of honor which never dies, no matter how much he disagrees with society's concepts of right or wrong. Twenty-two years of police work has not outlasted this conviction in my own heart, and I have found in this work the innumerable situations justifying this belief in human beings. The successful police officer makes it a policy to deal with the criminal element first as man to man, treating him as a free man with the age-old theory that every person is deemed to be innocent until proved to be guilty."

Not a bad guess. The era is dead on. Since you mentioned it, there is a coincidence between this mystery lawman’s name and another one close to Purvis.

Nice one. It certainly does sound like something Sheriff Andy Taylor would say. However, the mystery lawman preceded Andy by some years, though.

Hoover is not the mystery lawman, but refer to post #5 nevertheless.

I doubt very much that this lawman would hold these thoughts very long after working in an Amish community of most any eastern city.

Just guessing ... Wyatt Earp, in his later days in California? Most folks don’t realize he passed away in 1929. A long and full life.

As a guess—and to introduce him to many folks who don’t know about him:

William. W. Sterling, long-time Texas Ranger who rose to become very well-known nationally as Attorney General of Texas in the 30s.
