When This Dog Copied His Owner Getting Down on the Ground, It May Have Saved His Own Life

When local police raided a home in the Vargem Grande neighborhood of Santa Catarina, Brazil, one smart pup knew exactly what to do— he laid down.

Filippo Valdez, the police spokesman, explained:

“There was a male dog that was barking when officers burst onto the scene but when it saw its owners obeying the command to lie down, it ran over and laid down as well.”

According to Metro, local police generally shoot animals that are present when they are carrying out armed raids. But because this dog followed suit when his owner and owner’s companions were ordered to hit the deck, he wasn’t shot.

Globo.com reported that two men were arrested, one of whom is said to be the leader of a criminal gang in Santa Catarina. As a result of the raid, drugs — including marijuana and cocaine — and weapons were seized.

No charges were brought against the obedient pup.

Yeah, in the USA, the fat cop serving the warrant would have shot the dog while he was lying there like that...

That's called "deescalating a highly charged situation" in cop speak.

Do we copy the Brazilians or do they copy us?

The dog is laying down because he is being playful with his owner. When my wife gets down on the floor to play with our dog, the dog is laying down already because that is conditioned behavior. Dogs are easy to condition because they don’t have opposable thumbs and can’t open up dog food packages.

I think it's more likely that the dog saw everyone else hit the floor and sensed their fear, and decided he should follow suit.

Belly-up and looking away is classic submissive behavior for dogs.

In ‘Merica, the cops would have shot the dog, skinned him, and eaten him! Then they would have all lied about it.. and.. and.. pooped on the carpet... yeah...

Dunno about you, but some ne'er-do-well Barney Fife comes into my home and shoots my dog, I'm not going to be de-escalating jack shit.

Don’t assume all cops are like that.. I have cop buddy that is a major dog lover...

Years back he was going to be part of a raid on a crack house.. ..

The house had a pit-bull in the yard..

He knew the dog would probably get shot....

So he went a few night before the raid, on his own, plain clothes, at night, stuck in the yard, and stole the dog..
