In a recent video from PoliTech, some students from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX sought to find out how politically challenged our college-aged youths are. Several questions were asked to the students like, “Who won the Civil War, Who is our Vice-President, and Who did we gain our independence from?”

U.S. students don’t know much about American history, according to results of a national test released Tuesday.
Just 13 percent of high school seniors who took the 2010 National Assessment of Educational Progress — called the Nation’s Report Card — showed solid academic performance in American history. The two other grade levels tested didn’t perform much better, which just 22 percent of fourth-grade students and 18 percent of eighth-graders scoring proficient or better.
The test quizzed students on such topics as colonization, the American Revolution, the Civil War and the contemporary United States. For example, one question asks fourth-graders why it was important for the United States to build canals in the 1800s.
“The history scores released today show that student performance is still too low,” said Education Secretary Arne Duncan in a prepared statement. “These results tell us that, as a country, we are failing to provide children with a high-quality, well-rounded education.”

I hope the answer is "Freedom" but I fear the answer is "Tyranny".
Got-ya videos mean nothing. But stats like that one above certainly do mean something. The lack of classroom discipline plays a part here.
But there is a second problem. It's the idiotic educational fad called "teaching higher level thinking skills". Memorization is now not just frowned upon, it's forbidden.
So teachers are no longer allowed to emphasize facts. Instead students get questions like: How would a Civil War affect poor families?
Facts like who actually fought the war, who were the top commanders, etc., are no longer important.
Much the same thing occurs in math classes! In my district, math teachers must give FULL credit to wrong answers, as long as the "thinking" behind the answers meet certain guidelines.

The nation lost a huge population. The south still retained much of the same system that they started with. The Federal government ballooned far past its original powers, and we are still dealing with the resentment in 2015.
Yes, Texas ranks right down there with the best of them. Starts somewhere in Texas public schools around the middle or high school level. They are taught and learn only whats on the test to graduate.
But to be fair, the questions were a bit racist (see disclaimer below) and their significance never taught to the millennials. The interviewer should have ask them a more relevant question such as when do we celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
BTW They always ask my generation who was buried in Grant's tomb. Guess what, some of us (like Joe Biden, maybe) did not know the correct answer.
So next time, ask them who is buried in the tomb of the unknown soldier. Sadly, a few will fail to know the correct answer. But if they concentrate, it'll come to them.

I went to basic with a guy who’s MOS was basically “undertaker”. I think the official term was “graves registration” but I’m not sure. His Dad owned a mortuary.
The problem has nothing to do with indoctrination. It’s all about parents not teaching their kids from the beginning.
If your family doesn’t instill a love of learning, it’s tough to make it.
People keep blaming schools when the real problem is families that don’t value a good education.
