Cops Shot And Killed 17-Year-Old Girl At Texas Police Station
Talking Points Memo ^ | January 26, 2015 | Caitlin MacNeal

Posted on 01/26/2015 9:36:02 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The Longview Police Department placed three officers on leave after a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in the lobby of the station last week, the Marshall News Messenger reported.

According to officials, Kristiana Coignard entered the Texas police station on Thursday evening brandishing a weapon. Police spokeswoman Kristie Brian said Coignard used a phone in the lobby to call police dispatch and asked to see an officer.

When officers arrived in the lobby, she "came at the officers" with a weapon, according to Brian. Police did not confirm what type of weapon Coignard had, but Longview Mayor Jay Dean said that she was carrying a knife, according to the Marshall News Messenger.

Justice of the Peace James Mathis said Coignard was shot "multiple times," according to the Marshall News Messenger.

Police have not released many details about the incident. It remains unclear why Coignard entered the police station and what occurred before she was shot.

The 17-year-old was living with her aunt, Heather Robertson, who told ThinkProgress that her niece had been struggling with mental illness.

“I think it was a cry for help," Robertson said about Coignard's actions last week. "I think they could have done something. They are grown men. I think there is something they are not telling us."

Robertson said her niece has struggled with depression and bipolar disorder since her mother died when she was four years old. Coignard has been hospitalized twice after trying to commit suicide. Robertson told ThinkProgress that Coignard "was only violent with herself."

The three officers involved in the incident were placed on leave, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

In police training they often have you hold your pistol straight out in front of you and have someone come at you with a (rubber) knife from 30 feet away. It’s amazing how quickly they’re upon you.

“Heck I could disarmed her and I’m a fat Ole guy”

You wasn’t there so we’ll never know, all we have is your boisterous claim and sarcastic demeaning comments to go by. But hey if you say so, your the person behind the key board.

Did a woman cop shoot her? If not, I think its pathetic if a bunch of 6’ 2” male cops couldn’t handle a 17 year old girlie with a knife.

The little ones can kill you just as dead as the big ones, especially if a force multiplier (e.g. a weapon) is used.

You're joking, right? This waif should have been easily handled.

Selfish. Now those officers have to live with her idiotic decision.

Or their own lack of balls. Fire them ASAP for being pussies.

So you flatly reject self-defense?

That is the position you have outlined.

So what happens when you go to disarm the person running at you with a knife, and you miss?

My uncle had the same thing happen to him when a NYPD officer. A Black male came at him and his partner with a knife. They had time to shoot him. But why use lethal force? His partner distracted the guy for half a second, and my uncle -- 6 inches taller than the perp -- knocked him out cold with one punch. There were THREE cops involved here, and the girl was even shorter. NO EXCUSE. MAN UP, dammit.

“A REAL man would have assessed the threat...UNDERSTOOD that I had THREE (3) buddies with me...would have looked for an alternative. PERIOD.”

You might not have had enough time to even *think* that, let alone be able to *do* it. I’ll wait until they release the video before I second-guess anyone.

If a person runs at me with a knife in such a way that I feel in imminent danger, and I have a gun in my hand, I am going to shoot that person until I fell satisfied that I am no longer in danger.

How tall are you? I bet the average of those three cops was well over 6 feet. She was 5' 3". Do you know how easily they could have knocked her out cold with that reach differential? Maybe you are trigger happy, but we expect our cops to be better trained and more disciplined than that.

“I think it was a cry for help,"

It must have gotten garbled in the translation then. Waving a knife can do that sometimes.

Cops are too quick on the trigger regardless of whose fault it is.

This statement is incoherent. If it is not the shooter's fault, then they cannot be "too quick on the trigger" - which is an allegation of culpability.

“How hard is it for three cops to take down a girl with a knife,”

Ever been in a knife fight? One wrong move and you are dead.

Living proof that everyone is a hero on the internet.

I wonder why they just didn’t taze her but the people would complain about that as well.

Pappy we both know they would much rather see dead cop’s. This attitude is ginned up by what I expect is numerous prior encounters with law-enforcement.

Not only that, but IMHO, had the cops disarmed her and sent her back to Granny, her next “cry for help” would have been to attack one or more unarmed civilians and kill or maim some of them. Then the hankie twisters on FR would have attacked the police from some other angle.

Don’t let her waif-like appearance fool you. The little bastard who pulled off the Sandy Hook massacre was so wimpy, he looked like he couldn’t pull his own puddin’ and look at that result!

By virtue of the phone call made in the lobby of the PD, her actions were premeditated, and appear to be suicidal. That was the outcome, anyhow.

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape. You don’t spit into the wind. You don’t pull the mask off the Lone Ranger. And you don’t start a ruckus in the Police Station while carrying a weapon. That’s NOT in the Bill of Rights!

I was watching a Kung-fu movie and one of the guys did a flip, flew 30 feet through the air and took a knife out of a guy’s hand with his bare foot.

I don’t know why the cops couldn’t have done that.

I wasn't there, so I won't jump to a conclusion either way. But bipolar sucks and my heart goes out to the girl and her family. I pray she's found wellness and peace in Jesus' arms.

The thing about bipolar treatment is you can be having a very good period with treatment, counseling, etc. You can feel you've turned the corner. Then, like a switch, a manic episode takes over. It's quick, frustrating, and heartbreaking.

“Then, like a switch, a manic episode takes over. It’s quick, frustrating, and heartbreaking.”

And in some cases has deadly results.
