Women's fashion discount retailer Deb Shops is closing all of its stores in Michigan and nationwide.

After more than 80 years in business, the Philadelphia-based retailer, which specializes in junior- and plus-size apparel, filed for Chapter 11 protection on Dec. 4, according to a news release. On Jan. 7, the bankruptcy court awarded Gordon Brothers Group and Hilco Merchant Resources the store closing process for all locations.

Officials with Gordon Brothers Group and Hilco Merchant Resources began going-out-of-business sales at approximately 287 Deb Shops retail locations Friday, Jan. 9, the release states.

The company's website gob.debshops.com now is simply an announcement for the sale. Everything in the stores is 30 to 50 percent off the lowest ticketed price.

Store furniture, fixtures and equipment also is for sale.

"We thank our many customers and dedicated employees for their tremendous loyalty over the years and are very proud of our associates' commitment to maintaining the high level of customer service we are known for throughout this transition," Dawn Robertson, chief executive officer of Deb Shops, said in a statement.

"While Deb Shops has a reputation for every day value, we encourage customers to take advantage of the significant additional discounts available during this time while the selection lasts," added Rick Edwards, co-president, Gordon Brothers Group's Retail Division.

Mike Keefe, president and CEO of Hilco Merchant Resources, said the sale won't last long.

"We anticipate that this will be a short sale due to the outstanding savings and the very desirable assortment of fashion and accessories. Consumers are encouraged to shop early to enjoy the greatest selection," he said in a statement.

Gordon Brothers Group and Hilco Merchant Resources are to oversee the going-out-of-business sales on behalf of Deb Shops in all locations, the release states.

Store locations will remain open until all merchandise has been sold.

Deb Shops is accepting gift cards through Sunday, March 8. And returns on merchandise purchased prior to Thursday, Jan. 8, are to be accepted through Friday, Feb. 6, in accordance with the return policy in effect at the time of purchase, the website states.

Still believe that the unemployment rate is really 5.6% in this country?

Hard to believe a plus-size apparel store would have to go out of business with all the overweight people out here.

I noticed that the retail sales report on the radio was described as "down slightly from November, 0.7%," which sounds HORRIBLE.

What about year-to-year? Sheesh.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the real under/unemployment number is close to 20%.

What’s funny is, is that yes, Wal-Mart does carry women’s plus sizes but has little to no men’s big and tall, at least in their retail stores.

Last week Food Lion closed its 66 discount Bottom Dollar stores and sold the buildings to Aldi. Yuck.
