My idea of a warning shot is a gaping chest wound warning the perp that he is about to bleed out.

Not a warning shot.... it needs to be a “oh crap... I missed that time” shot?

Warning shots? And if the man had had a knife, and ran at him, he’d be dead. Or severely wounded. Ok, he didn’t, but the security guard didn’t know that he wasn’t armed with some weapon.
I would have not shot into the floor, but into the man, solly Cholly! I don’t want to kill anyone either, but if it’s them or me, guess what.

He’s lucky that he wasn’t sodomized with his own pistol. The idiot.

Firing a warming shot is an invitation for the bad guy to shoot you. If you draw and shoot, shoot to kill.

>> Was that particular outcome even achieved here?

No idea.

At least the burglary was thwarted and no “good guys” were harmed.

Maybe I should have said “ended *relatively* well”.

FRegards back atcha.

I cannot endorse warning shots, other than to frighten young children committing crimes. If you are satisfied with “running off” a felon, you are an accomplice to that criminal’s future acts, be they burglary, robbery, rape or murder.

Yes, you might not know if it was “your” criminal who committed those acts, but you should be haunted whenever such acts happen thereafter in your area, because they might be carried out, perhaps for years, by “the one you let get away.”

This is not just your concern, either. Policemen are unhappy if a dangerous criminal they are pursuing gets away. Doubly so if they get the policeman’s gun and use it to commit crimes.

So instead of warning shots, give a “command voice ultimatum”, hopefully different than what they might expect, such as “Lay Down Or Die!” And mean it.

It is no longer about you. It is about you protecting family and friends. And if you fail to do so, you are risking the lives of perhaps several innocent people.

” The gun shots alerted the neighbors to call the police, so they had some positive effect.”

Reminds me of an ad for an alarm company. The ad showed a picture of a gun and a picture of an alarm panel, and under the gun it read “this will never call the police”. Immediately I knew that was bogus, at least where I live. Fire off a few rounds and the cops will be on the scene MUCH FASTER than responding to what is more than likely yet another false alarm.

The “would you shoot someone over a” property crime seems a common theme these days.

A person burglarizing a house at night should not be given the time to even ask that question.

“Holy smokes. If I ever find myself in a similar situation, I hope I have the guts to fire to kill.”

You really have to make up your mind before it happens and train yourself to do so. But once there, you also have to train yourself to restrain if not warranted. A guy may be roaming around your house looking like he’s about to break in, when, in fact, it’s a gas company guy trying to find the meter at night (for whatever reason). You really want to wait for some positive action...like breaking a window before taking action.

It’s high-stakes stuff. One mistake, either way, and it’s a life-changing (maybe life-ending) event.

Unless the guy is clearly fleeing, as in off your property or about to be off your property, with his back to you, then it stops being a “property crime” once you’re on the scene (assuming he knows that you’re there). It becomes “an encounter” with an UNKNOWN THREAT, and one has to assume worst case.

Oh I agree, just commenting on a common theme. IMO they are seeking to undermine the right of self defense as part of their antigun efforts.

We had a case where the person roaming around turned out to be a cop. Our house had been broken into and the next day a grungy looking guy was circling the house. Looking at windows from close up. My wife was home alone and called me in a panic. She was ready to shoot. I called the police to find out if they had someone there. About that time he finally pulled his badge out and displayed it.

A burglary figures everything he steals is worth his life, or he wouldn’t be in the house. I would have to agree. Rob, rape, and murder. What else would the burglar do?

Reminds me of an ad for an alarm company

I'm sure the ad portrayed the perp as a blonde-haired white guy.

Probably had a wheel gun. Nothing like fighting 21st century criminals with 19th century technology. I only carry one spare magazine with my Glock 23, but that gives me 27 rounds before I have to go to Plan B.

My warning shots will consist of two shots to the torso and one to the head.

Firing a warming shot is an invitation for the bad guy to shoot you. If you draw and shoot, shoot to kill.

You never shoot to kill, you shoot to neutralize the threat. Minimum response is typically two shots to center mass. Then you make sure the world is a safe place and reassess the threat.

Nope...no pictures of people in that ad. I just remember it because 95% (or more) of Americans live close enough to others to have the 911 switchboard TOTALLY LIGHT UP when they fire off a few rounds.
