You have a lot more confidence in Congress than I do. They will moan and groan and kick dirt around then go along with what Obama wants.
The embargo really isn’t all that important. The fact is that other nations trade with Cuba and thus Cubans already have access to American products. American money flows freely into Cuba. The real issue with the embargo and with normalizing diplomatic relations with Cuba is that it will open the country up to billions in American loans. Allowing the Cuban government access to billions in American loans will do little more than keep the Castro regime entrenched and in power.
I don’t think Congress will go along with Obama on this issue. Anti-communism and anti-Castro sentiment is still very strong in the GOP. It wouldn’t shock me if the establishment sees this as the opportunity to oppose Obama while supporting his other, more directly negative policies. Cuba could become smoke and mirrors for the GOP.
Who would loan Cuba money? They have no means of repaying it.

There is something very superficial about Obama. There’s an amount of intelligence behind Obama but it’s a misdirected intelligence. It’s perhaps one of the negatives of affirmative action, Obama’s been told he’s smart because he offered the “right” perspective on race when he was in school.
When it comes to foreign policy he seems to have a very naive view of how things work. Because he’s likely a narcissist or sociopath he doesn’t understand how other people think. Thus he’s easily taken by sweet talking foreign diplomats who will give him a photo op in exchange for everything they want. Meanwhile Republicans drive him absolutely crazy because they won’t completely cater to him. In any event, Obama isn’t nearly as bright as he thinks he is. The question is whether he’s as evil as conservatives think he is or if he’s actually just woefully naive.

Who would loan the United States money?
The USSR wasn't overthrown, it collapsed.
This due to RR's policy, "We win. They lose."
The USSR was effectively bankrupt when RR walked away from disarmament talks in Reykjavik. Gorbachev recognized he didn't have the $$$ to engage in a new arms race.
Russians were passive observers.
I think the way it is now, if a Cuban reaches the US soil, they can stay... thus the ppl trying to get here in home made boats.. so once this goes thru, all the ppl who get here by obamas decree will be staying.. sorta an amnesty deal for them..
Yeah....like all the other American Laws he decided to overturn.
If you’re the Cubans though, you’re not going to give up a whole lot in exchange for eliminating the embargo because at best Obama can only guarantee two embargo free years. The next President could easily overturn Obama’s embargo elimination, the Courts could prevent the President from lifting it.
Having said that, based on what Obama’s done so far he appears willing to give the Cubans whatever they want in exchange for nothing.
The fed
Any bets banks in Cuba will be the first growth area? got to wash the stuff some place.
Anyway../..this put a bomb under all the dims 2016 presidential hopefuls.
On some level it makes the GOP’s shot a little better. Florida is almost certainly to go Republican now. Cuban refugees have been drifting from the GOP in recent elections. Obama’s move outraged this group and they’re likely to be brought back into the Republican fold.
“The problem with negotiating in secret and leaving Congress out of the Cuba decision is that Congress will actually be necessary in order to make substantial changes in our Cuban relations. The American embargo is codified in law passed by Congress. Obviously the embargo is a major issue for the Cubans. President Obama cant simply eliminate the embargo, its part of American law. “
No problem. The RINOs will just pass whatever Obama says. Just like with Obamacare and amnesty.
I guess that’s possible. That said, there are a lot of neo-cons in the GOP and they like nothing more than fighting the Cold War and for them Cuba is the last battle in the Cold War. Plus, Obama’s actions put Florida in play and they create an opportunity for Sen. Marco Rubio. I don’t think they’ll cave, at least not completely, on this issue.
I hope you’re right and they have principles on ONE issue. It will be little enough.
