Can I just speak for a moment in defense of the Catholic Church as a non-member. It really is a falsehood that they were the persecutors during the worst of the Inquisitions, the Spanish Inquisition namely.
The Spanish Inquisition was carried out by the Spanish Crown and not the Catholic Church, who warned against it over and over again. Also important to note the Jews who were persecuted were only ethnically Jewish. One of the reasons they were brought to trial was because they had converted to Christianity (or rather forced by a mob and then refused to return to Judaism when the Church nullified the conversions). So really, the Inquisition was a persecution of both Jews and Christians at the same time.
