A Columbia High School biology teacher killed and slaughtered a rabbit in front of 16 sophomores to show them how livestock is processed into food, Allison Westfall, the Nampa School District spokeswoman, said Thursday.

The matter has been turned over to the district’s human resources department, Westfall said. She would not speculate on what might happen to the teacher because it is a personnel matter.

She said she didn’t have the name of the teacher.

The teacher expressed remorse for his action in class on Monday, Westfall told the Idaho Statesman.

“That is not part of the biology curriculum,” she said....

I am still trying to determine what the problem is here.

Anything that results in more people really understanding that ultimately meat does not come from a foam tray wrapped in cellophane at the grocery store, is a good thing.

You’re right, he should’ve done it in a Home Economics class instead.

Sure. If you want to destroy the meat industry. Some things are best kept behind the green curtain. Just like most of US know what genitals look like, we don’t need to see them under most circumstances.

Reminds me of the kid that for his project, avid hunter that he is, brought a freshly taken squirrel or similar in.

Students that had a problem with the demo on dressing/cleaning fresh kill were excused.

Still caused a bit a problem.

FWIW, the "Joy of Cooking" had instructions for dressing small "rodents" until the early 1960s, iirc.

With rabbit, I'm a bit paranoid of tularaemia, myself.

Heck, make that paranoia of God-knows-what with any wild rodents...

We had an exchange student from Japan. She said in her high school, when it came time to dissect frogs, they arrived in class alive. Each student had to kill their own frog. Not pleasant, but it had to be done.

"Killed and slaughtered"

What'd he/she do...bring it back to life before the second one?

I’m from a ranch myself, but slaughtering/butchering belongs in an ag class/setting where everyone knows what they are there for-not in a biology class-and I’m pretty sure this teacher used a cute little bunny to shock the kids and move them toward abhorrence of meat, too.

If the teacher really wanted to teach about the animals that we eat, he would have had the kids chase down and castrate a half-grown boar hog-in 15 minutes or less, they would be ready to slaughter that hog bare handed...

This teacher offered students a contact with reality, a chance for them to observe in bloody physical detail instead of read in sterile isolation. If such events are harmful or ill advised, why do schools still offer field trips? Maturity requires experience and a knowledge of the world that videos cannot provide.

Another story on the same incident says that he raises rabbits for meat on the side, so I doubt that he was trying to turn the students against eating meat.
