The Canadian government has had to warn its citizens not to carry cash to the USA because the USA does not presume innocence but guilt when it comes to money. Over $2.5 billion has been confiscated from Canadians traveling to the USA, funding the police who grab it.
If you are bringing cash to the land of the free, you will find that that saying really means they are FREE to seize all your money under the pretense you are engaged in drugs with no evidence or other charges.
It costs more money in legal fees to try to get it back so it is a boom business for unethical lawyers to such an extent than only one in sixth people ever try to get their money back and the cops just pocket it. Thats right. Money confiscated is usually allowed to be kept by the department who confiscated it.
This is strangely working its way into funding police and pensions.
This is identical to the very issue that resulted in the final collapse of Rome when the armies began to sack cities to pay for their pensions. We are at that level now with respect to seizing whatever they want knowing you will have to spend more in legal fees to assert your rights that do not really exist.
Those trying to flee tyranny elsewhere can not bring money with them for the police get to take it on this end.
This pretend war on terrorism is really a wholesale war against the people. It serves as the justification to seize whatever they desire ever since 9/11 as reported by the Washington Post.
Just out of curiosity, why no energy drink cans?
Canada Ping!
The current regime has a strange policy when it comes to money. “What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine too”. If I was a Canadian, I wouldn’t bring any credit or debit cards either. The people living in this country are pretty greedy when it comes to money these days. They’ll rob you blind. It’s all part of our “fundaMENTAL transformation”.
I’m not sure what you mean? If Canadians don’t appreciate helping American police by having their legitimate cash confiscated then just stay home?
Reminds me of the East German border guards. Was considered wise to have some Kennedy half dollars or other bribe so they didn’t steal everything.
I guess that what happens when you get a “Department of Homeland Security”. Sounds so Soviet but they called it the “KGB” but it operated much the same.
my guess is a lot of drug traffickers drink energy drinks to stay awake driving on the late evening/early morning hours. they want to get where they are going as fast as possible, no stops, and want to stay awake.
So do the rest of us who have to do long drives and want to get done with them as fast as possible.
Can’t wait for some jackboot to pull me over and try that BS because I drink energy drinks. This country has become a joke. This ain’t freedom.
very true.
energy drinks are not the smell of pot wafting out a driver’s window.
This country is a shiite pot. Particulary where law enforcement is concerned. Not worth saving.
I tell my kids not to enlist like i did.
or $2.5 billion from one person! lol
Is coffee still OK?
Although I know the cash forfeiture (seizure) scam is pretty bad. I agree that the numbers suggested here are pretty hard to swallow.
This started long before Obama. Henry Hyde saw fit to complain about the widespread abuse of asset forfeiture in the early 1990s.
It’s bipartisan and nonpartisan ... and totalitarian.
I was planning on retiring in Washington state with my $30 million dollar lottery win. I’m not sure I can do that now.
LOL
I think you can take any amount over $10,000 out of the country legally, just as long as you declare it to U.S. Customs before you leave.
I’ll try to remember. If something is posted in news, there are places to check for States and some countries. If it is posted in general or blogs, the choices are limited.
Not just from Canadians. The $2.5 B is total asset forfeitures. The number of forfeitures is 61,998. The Wall Street Journal used to print pages of the asset forfeiture notifications in its tiniest font twice a week. Those were just the federal forfeitures. The process is now streamlined such that the authorities don’t have to print the notices.
The source is the Washington Post.
The Wall Street Journal has been reporting on this for about twenty years.
This $2.5 B total just covers the federal and federal “equitable sharing” program. State asset forfeitures are in addition to this total.
I took $1,000 and a credit card when I visited the States.
