The Catholic Church in the West recruits its clergy from the ranks of men who have a celibate vocation. If you aren't convinced you have a celibate vocation from God, you really shouldn't be a Catholic priest in the West.

This problem of older gay men exploiting adolescents and boys for sexual purposes has nothing inherently to do with celibacy, but I think it is strong connected to the "therapeutic culture" that invaded all our institutions, including ALL churches, especially in the 60's and 70's. "Caring" institution especially came to see such moral failures not as crimes and sins, but as manifestations of psychological difference.

Not only did church people start going strong on "understanding" and weak on internal discipline, but there were many others --- police, prosecutors, judges, educators, counselors, therapists, journalists, ordinary citizens --- who knew about these criminal offenses and did not stop them.

That's a big reason why pedophiles were (and are) drawn to professions like teacher, camp counselor, youth director, coach, clergy, etc: they know they will have lots of contact with the young, and they know that the "caring people" around them are likely to take a point of view that will look the other way and minimize their moral trespasses.

Plus, there are several reasons why the Catholic Church was singled out when many other far more deeply implicated institutions (public schools, etc.) escaped scrutiny altogether:

Carefully preserved records going back many decades. As one investigator (Dr. Charol Shakeshaft, Hofstra University) explains, with the Catholic Church "investigators and prosecutors have access to extraordinarily full documentation in the case of priests: correspondence, medical and psychological counseling records, and employment history starting when the man was a seminary student. “Almost none of that would end up in a public school teacher’s personnel file.”
Deep pockets: With the Catholic Church, you can strip the parochial school, the parish, the Diocese itself of buildings, bank accounts, property: assets otherwise devoted to religious and charitable purposes become exposed to seizure in a settlement, whether the parishioners who end up paying the bill were involved in the abuse, knew of the abuse, or were even born at the time.
Gotcha factor.The Catholic Church has strong and well-defined doctrines against sexual misbehavior, and it's just delicious to secular/left media to catch a priest with his pants down. Are they also investigating the public schools, counselors and psychotherapists, health and fitness gurus, Liberal Judaism or the Unitarian Church? The question answers itself...

Mrs. Don-o: you can add to your list acting schools for professional actors & actresses. In the 60s and 70s these schools produced more pervert teachers than anything I was exposed to as a Catholic school kid. All of these schools - through touchy/feely Method acting techniques brought out male and female predators like crazy. Paul Mann was one. In the 1980s, Spy Magazine did a story on it and I said: finally, someone has told the truth. Since then, it’s been crickets. I no longer attend and I’m now too old to be preyed upon (as is my husband) but I have nasty memories of the past...
