Fast Food Workers in for Big Surprise
6foot2inhighheelshoes.com ^ | Sept. 4, 2014 | Melissa Dawdy

Sept 4, 2014  Statistically, minimum wage earners tend to be young, and don't have the experience or knowledge to predict the outcome of a federally mandated $15 minimum wage. If they understood the incentives of corporate  investors, inventors, endemic Washington cronyism, or even basic economics, they might think twice about doing "whatever it takes".

One of the interesting things about life is that no matter how backwards our culture or government is, technology marches on, and the latest foot soldier is this: (picture at http://www.6foot2inhighheelshoes.com)

Along with automated credit card kiosks, fast food is about to change, and probably for the better, as the technology promises higher quality, more food choices and a lower price that what you would have to pay human workers.  It's always worthwhile to assess the short run benefits, which accrue to lobbyists and investors of McDonald's and other fast food giants, who have already invested and tested these devices and are prepared to replace their troublesome and unpredictable workforce.

In the long run, we may all benefit, as this Business Insider story explains: "The issue of machines and job displacement has been around for centuries and economists generally accept that technology like ours actually causes an increase in employment. The three factors that contribute to this are 1. the company that makes the robots must hire new employees, 2. the restaurant that uses our robots can expand their frontiers of production which requires hiring more people, and 3. the general public saves money on the reduced cost of our burgers. This saved money can then be spent on the rest of the economy.”

And then there are the investors in the automated machinery who surely have invested a lot of money to lobby for higher minimum wages so they can sell these machines to restaurants.

Prepare for the next generation of featherbedding.

These new fast food robots will require human "minders" to keep an eye on them, make sure that they don't break down, carry the oil can, etc.

Young, inexperienced and sometimes unreliable workers will be pushed out for older, more stable workers.

Yep . . . and more self checkout at stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, WalMart . . . and these kiosk type ordering machines at McD’s, Burger King . . . and we won’t need you at 7.35 or 15.00. I get so sick of hearing how McD’s can afford it . . . well most McD’s are owned by small business owners.

"... a federally [emphasis added] mandated $15 minimum wage."
FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

As mentioned in related threads, please consider the following.

With the exception of the federal entities indicated in the Constitution's Clauses 16 & 17 of Section 8 of Article I as examples, entities under the exclusive legislative control of Congress, the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate intrastate labor wages. In other words, it is the states who uniquely have the 10th Amendment-protected power to regulate such wages.

So what we're seeing here concerning so-called federally mandated minimum wage is the following imo. As a consequence of parents not making sure that their children are being taught the federal government's constitutionally limited powers, corrupt federal politicians are getting away with exploiting low-information voters by making constitutionally indefensible promises about raising federal minimum wage in order to win their votes.

Note that the states can always amend the Constitution to grant the feds the specific power to regulate a national minimum wage.

That's to be expected. Back when I was in the factory, part of my job was keeping the robots doing their thing. It did mean 4 jobs getting done with 3 fewer employees.

“pushed out for older, more stable workers”

Don’t think so, more like illegal immigrants will have their jobs who will work for less money.

SEIU could be replaced by a turd. Except there's actually some productive uses for a turd and turds smell better than SEIU protesters.

“Along with automated credit card kiosks, fast food is about to change, and probably for the better, “

When I go to McDonalds it is a major chore to order given the communication gap that exists. I can’t understand what they are saying and anything more than “Number 1” seems to go over their head.

One of the interesting things about life is that no matter how backwards our culture or government is, technology marches on

Technology and productivity increases are inherently deflationary and all else being equal, should result in lower prices and higher wages. But our backward government and our Federal Reserve are able to steal productivity increases from consumers and workers through inflation, debt creation and money printing.
