More than half of Americans now depend on government subsidies

Government dependency is on the rise, with more than half of all Americans relying on the government for survival. While the Obama administration is broadening eligibility, US citizens increasingly also say they prefer it this way.

Americans’ self-reliability has been decreasing as eligibility for Medicaid, food stamps, earned income tax credit, work pay tax credit and unemployment benefits have broadened since 2009 to allow more US citizens to enjoy them.

More than half of the US population – 165 million of 308 million Americans – is now dependent on the state in some form. Of these, 107 million Americans rely on government welfare, 46 million seniors collect Medicare and there are 22 million government employees.

The number of Americans on welfare have increased from 97 million to 107 million since President Obama took office, according to research by Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee Jeff Sessions. The number of Americans on food stamps during the president’s term has risen by more than 14 million.

“Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and wouldn’t have to train for a job – they’d just send you a welfare check,” stated a recent anti-Obama television advertisement.

And it seems that Americans increasingly want it that way. In 2011, a report by Globescan showed that the number of US citizens who believe in the strength of a free market economy dropped to 59 percent from 74 percent in the previous year, falling below Brazil and China. When Globescan first conducted this survey ten years ago, 80 percent of Americans favored a free market economic system.

Those with the lowest annual incomes were more likely to oppose a free market economy.

The financial event horizon has been crossed. Now no candidate can win who promises to give away less in benefits than his opponent. They will keep increases until the system collapses.

When those pulling the cart are outnumbered by those riding in it, it doesn’t bode well for our survival as a nation.

If you're not on government subsidies then you make/have too much. That's not fair (Obama said so). We must have a One World standard of living monitored by a One World Government. It's the only way to be fair.

Wonder if that figure adds in those retirees on SSAN which is now called “federal benefit”?

America is set up for collapse. King Obama has his wish and the ignorant Americans let it happen. Things might have turned around in 2012 but who knows. Romney was very concerned with the 47 million that depended on the welfare system.

109,631,000 Americans lived in households that received benefits from one or more federally funded "means-tested programs" — also known as welfare — as of the fourth quarter of 2012, according to data released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.

When those receiving benefits from non-means-tested federal programs — such as Social Security, Medicare, unemployment and veterans benefits — were added to those taking welfare benefits, it turned out that 153,323,000 people were getting federal benefits of some type at the end of 2012.

82,679,000 of the welfare-takers lived in households where people were on Medicaid, said the Census Bureau. 51,471,000 were in households on food stamps. 22,526,000 were in the Women, Infants and Children program. 20,355,000 were in household on Supplemental Security Income. 13,267,000 lived in public housing or got housing subsidies. 5,442,000 got Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. 4,517,000 received other forms of federal cash assistance.

Now there's a surprise. You don't suppose that the gov't is giving away free cell phones to buy votes, do you? Maybe this helps explain why my SS benefits have risen .1% while Obozo's been in office, but welfare subsidies have risen over 30%. Gees...I wonder why?

This is all true. I hate to bust anyone’s bubble but America is through being a representative constitutional republic. With more than 50% living off the gov’t dole (other hard working people’s money) it is virtually impossible to turn back the clock. Our educational system and media have created a dependent class incapable of think ing for themselves. The values of private property rights, free enterprise, and laissey-faire economics is over. With 30-50 million potential teat sucking democrats in the wings, hang on to your hats. You can buy some ammo and keep the looters away for awhile but ultimately chaos and ruin awaits us without a moral revival.

“Depend” on government subsidies. What a misleading term. They really don’t depend on them. Most people would not be living on the streets if they did not have them. They’ve gotten used to government subsidies, feel entitled to them and will get angry and vote against anyone who tries to take them away.

This is how a Welfare State dies. The voting takers outnumber the producers and saddle the producers with more and more tax burden. There is nothing cruel about saying this and conversely, there is nothing compassionate about being for more subsidies. We are on the road to a dead economy and ultimately, defaults and riots.

The first thing to pop into my head was Airhead Ryan blubbering about how this is all OK because he doesn’t want to call his mommy or his unemployed buddy “takers.” Let’s just figure out how to flog some more tax dollars out of the producers and keep the Ponzi Scheme going until this generation is dead.

The problem lies within the definition here.

Welfare.

Welfare is NOT Social Security benefits, Medicare, retirement pensions and the like. Take these benefits paid in by the makers and define welfare as freebies that takers get - then get back to me with the real numbers.

If you include the number of people indirectly tied to govt spending, I bet the number is close to 80-90%. Suppliers, contractors, those supporting contractors, etc.
