Ferguson vs. Boston
Concrete Classroom ^ | August 18, 2014 | Michael Kaechele

The tragic event of the killing of MIchael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri have led to protests and rioting against police brutality. It brings to the surface (again) the institutional racism that has always been in our country. I think white privilege causes some to look at Ferguson as an excuse for criminal activity rather than a political protest. William Chamberlain tweeted a comment about the looting comparing it to the Boston Tea Party. I made this image.

I think this leads to many questions:

•What are the similarities between the events?
•What are the differences?
•What are the issues that each side is upset about?
•Why did the people in Boston dress up as Native Americans?
•What stereotypes does that show?
•What stereotypes do people have about the way the man on the left is dressed?
•What is institutional racism and how should it be addressed?
•Why is the image on the right called a “party”?
•The event on the right has been mythologized and treated as action by heroes. Do you think the event on the left will be?
•Should the people in either picture be considered heroes or criminals?

If you choose to use this in class, I would encourage you to have students generate their own questions before you ask them your own. This will both engage them and if you pay attention to what they ask you will be able to gauge their viewpoint on the events in Ferguson. I also would encourage you to follow this up with research of the multiple perspectives of what is happening there.

It certainly does. And the sooner we refute and denounce this racism by Holder, Obama, Crump, Sharpton, the MSM and other racists, the better off we will be.

Meanwhile; there's this....

There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.

I think black privilege allows ghetto guerillas to use “racism” as a convenient justification for their culture’s continued failures. Slavery ended 150 years ago. Get over it already.

The writer demonstrates his own confusion by even postulating some form of comparability.

The idea that someone stealing wine from a convenience store is actually protesting something suggests an impressive level of naivete, The Bostonian tax protest was never intended to serve any other purpose. The participants dumped the tea into the harbor, they did not rush to take it home, for personal consumption. Had they been individually challenged on their participation, the participants could almost certainly have explained the issue over taxation by a distant Government.

Does the writer even imagine that the wine thief could articulate any rational justification for his action? Or even explain the significance of his manner of dress?

I googled the teacher. He is white and teaches at a mostly white school. He is very well regarded and has won numerous awards for this teaching.

Boston talker Howie Carr complained a few years ago about his town’s new HS. In the brand new library, they had carved “Obama” into the pantheon of noted historical authors and philosophers in time for the grand opening.
