Five Ways to Spot a Problem Employee

Find Them Before They Spoil the Bunch

As a business owner and/or manager, you work hard and spend a considerable amount of time and money on hiring the right people. Prior experience, references and whether or not the person will fit into your company's culture are all things that must be carefully examined. If you're thorough and do your homework, chances are the person will likely work out.

But what happens six months, a year, or 5 years down the road when things take a turn for the worse?

Employees—especially those on the fast track—work hard to stand out and find a way to showcase their professional accomplishments to superiors. Therefore it's easy for bosses to spot an employee working hard who possesses a positive attitude, unrelenting work ethic and impressive achievements. But while these are obvious, it's more difficult (but no less important) to spot the signs of an employee who has grown dissatisfied and complacent. Not only should be on the lookout for these workers because of the turnover costs should they decide to leave, but also because allowing them to stay on the job when their hearts aren't in it is a morale killer.

The problem employee is the same one who will bring all kinds of suits against the employer who acts in a prudent manner, and proceeds with termination of the undesirable.

It is rather like detaching a leech or tick once they have attached themselves. There is no painless way.

I'm not going to click through 7 pages to read an article from someone who doesn't know the difference between self promotion and quality work.

06. Doesn’t have a Birth Certificate

07. Habitually lies about everything - then lies about his previous lies

08. Totally incompetent and blames his screw-ups on the man he replaced

09. Not familiar with American history, American culture and American idiom

10. Speaks well from script but awkward without one - as if he really doesn’t understand what he is saying.

“If the average American voter had the brains of your average pop stand owner, he would be long gone. “

Its not so much that the average voter is stupid. Its just that they don’t care and make their decision based on 30 seconds of media coverage. Of course the media they listen too is like the pied piper.

They are good followers, sheep, lemmings, who only really care about themselves. This is why voting should be limited to property owners.

We have people in our company who actually do high quality work and those who are mostly good at self promotion. With a couple of exceptions, the great self-promoters have offices and the quality workers have desks.

One is actually good at both.

I hate articles like that. I'll come back when someone posts a list. FR etiquette dictates that the poster of the thread post the list, rather than forcing everybody to click through five pages of ads & scripts.

Nice, but with affirmative action, you can’t fire certain slackers.

While it's necessary to point out potential pitfalls in any plan, the rule of thumb should be coming up for a solution to every problem you point out.

This is guaranteed to result in important issues not being identified in time to head them off.

Its comical to read about these problem employee characteristics as I have seen them up close and personal.

My first so called ‘ professional ‘ job only had about 8 or 9 people and about 7 of them exhibited ALL of them.

Really an unhappy, miserable bunch with few exceptions. Of course, the better ones left after a little while.

Not a fun place to work and it didn’t help that the owner wasn’t the most pleasant person.
