Dunno bout you, but I quit trusting LEO in general after working towards becoming one a number of years ago. Went through the oral review, background checks, psych evals, so forth and so on. Was sent on a series of ridealongs, which worked wonders in changing my mind about being a cop. Something about pissing all over the Constitution I just couldn’t bring myself to do. It’s no longer about protecting and serving, unless we’re talking protecting the pension and serving the union.

The problem ends at the state level with “Police De-Paramilitarization” laws. This means that states create a list of weapons, explosives, and equipment that police departments in that state are *allowed* to have. With some variances for special activities, like water rescue.
Any weapons, explosives or equipment that police departments have that is not on the authorized list must be turned over to the state police, for storage in state police facilities.
Part two of the “Police De-Paramilitarization” laws is to forbid police departments in the state from accepting any funding, weapons, explosives or equipment directly from the federal government. This includes advanced communications and identity equipment. So local police do not have immediate access to the massive federal databases of civilian information.
Part three of the “Police De-Paramilitarization” laws is that any information obtained through classified or secret government means, and its derivatives, including anonymous sources, is not admissible in any state criminal court. This thumbs its nose at the federal intelligence apparatus, “Yes, you can spy on everyone, but at the state level, it doesn’t matter.”
Part four is to change state police academy curricula to adjust it to de-paramilitarization. This likely mandates that police use of steroids is a criminal, not an administrative matter, and will be prosecuted.

Medford is geographically a great place. There’s lots to do, and the weather is great for all but one month. But anyone with prospects of a better life left for greener economic pastures.
The people who stayed are the dregs, both on the Welfare Roles and in the Police Department.
For example, if you schedule 10 different contractors to come work on your place, only about 4 will ever show up, and none of them at the agreed time. The other 6 will never show up.

When a cop stopped me and told me he was recording the conversation, I was extremely hesitant to hold the conversation. I nearly said, “I want my lawyer now.”
If they’re recording, you are tied down by everything you say. They need to Mirandize you before recording, in my opinion.

The easy fix is to respond the same way to any question by a law enforcement officer. “I do not answer any questions by law enforcement without the presence of my attorney.”

This change in police behavior began in earnest in the mid-1970s, with a few high profile random police assassinations in the US. So the federal government encouraged all police to move from the “Old West”-type behavior to the “SWAT”-type behavior.
The most significant effect of this, other than to create a hostility between the public and the police, is that *more* police are being injured and killed, along with *far more* civilians.
But the bottom line is it has taken 35 years to create paramilitarized police forces, so it will be a process to return them to what they should be.
The reform begins at the state level, and parts of it are already happening. What is needed, however, is for states to accept it as a unified concept, a means to restore public confidence in the police, as well as to train the police against behaving like paramilitaries.
Agreed. The Patriot Act is the most egregious theft of personal freedom in our lifetime. The GOP Congress just keeps renewing it.
