DREAMers deserve freedom from fear
Star Democrat ^ | August 10, 2014 | STEVEN AND COKIE ROBERTS

Karina Velasco paid her way through college by cleaning office buildings in downtown Washington for five hours every evening. She did her schoolwork after getting home at midnight, and is on track to receive her degree in social work next spring. Karina is a model citizen except for one thing. She’s an illegal immigrant. She crossed the border without papers from her home in Mexico 10 years ago, whresponsibleaying for damages to car, medical bills.etc,etc.en she was 14. Under a program initiated by President Obama in 2012, Karina is one of about 550,000 young people, sometimes called “DREAMers,” who qualify for “deferred action” regarding their immigration status. That means they can obtain a work permit, a driver’s license, a social security number and some assurance that they won’t be deported. Karina can now work for a social service agency that helps other young people deal with the mental side effects of illegal immigration: stress, depression, fear. She knows the symptoms because she suffered them herself. “One night I woke up with a nightmare — my mom and dad were being deported,” she recalls. “I was crying and crying and I called my mother. I was like, ‘tell me you’re OK, tell me you’re here. What am I going to do with my brother here by myself? Who am I going to turn to?’ It was something I was always thinking about.” Karina’s terrors have abated, but she knows her protected status is not guaranteed. Obama’s program could be canceled by a Republican president. “I am always living with the uncertainty of what will happen,” she says. “I am scared that in a future day I won’t be able to renew my deferred action, and I will be in limbo again.”

If these people are so good, they need to return home and improve life in their countries.

Illegal aliens deserve nothing but deportation. If we're feeling generous, we could loan the ones brought here by their illegal alien parents money for a bus ticket back wherever they came from.

A reasonable person could support an argument to legalize people like Karina Velasco. That is what Reagan wanted but that is not what the Democrats want. They want blanket amnesty and endless government entitlements PLUS special bilingual treatment.
I am always skeptical of these types of articles. I find hard to believe that someone who put himself through college could not find the means to start the naturalization process.

Then leave and re-enter legally. Especially if they are givers. That way we can try to sift out the takers.

Most of them wouldn't even qualify for a tourist visa, let alone a permanent immigrant visa (green card.)

If you legalize the "Dreamers," you are essentially creating a never-ending stream of illegals. What many people do not know it that it is not necessary to have your parents bring you here to qualify for Obama's backdoor amnesty. You can come unaccompanied. And you can be up to age 30 to apply.

The 1986 amnesty was a blanket amnesty. You had to be here at least 5 years to apply. But the process was rife with fraud with phony document mills being set up within blocks of the processing centers. The USG estimated 1 million would apply, but the true number turned out to be 2.7 million.

The 1986 amnesty was supposed to be a one time affair. The proponents promised it would never happen again.

All the 1986 Amnesty did was guarantee there would be another...the precedent was set.

Not Reagan’s best moment.

Don’t buy into the dreamer label. Call them dream thieves or dream stealers. All of her family needs to repair the damage they have done to this country, then apply for entry.

Thanks for the info FR-iend.
What I was trying to convey was that the Democrats would not have any requirements for residency. Someone who just came across the border last week would be treated the same as someone living in the USA for ten years regardless of criminal history.
I believe the Reagan amnesty was only intended for illegals who did not commit serious crimes and had "sufficient ties to American life".
Do I understand correctly?
I think we both agree the Reagan amnesty was a mistake. You can't make good faith comprises with dishonest people.

Ed Meese said it was Reagan’s biggest mistake. When you reward something, you get more of it.

Yes, DREAMers deserve to be free from fear. Send them back home and let them be free from fear there.

And whose SS# did this female — assuming she actually exists — steal in order to work?

Look I understand it was her parents’ choice and not hers to break the law. But if your parent robs a bank, do you get to keep the money?

(((
Perfect answer!

Dreamers fear nothing. It’s the US taxpayer who lives in fear.

What I was trying to convey was that the Democrats would not have any requirements for residency. Someone who just came across the border last week would be treated the same as someone living in the USA for ten years regardless of criminal history.

The 2007 McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill essentially said that all those who here would be eligible for amnesty. Their status would legalized immediately (Z visa) and then they would be processed using background checks, etc. The problem is that with immediate legalization, you essentially stop all enforcement. And the bad guys won't apply, an estimated 2 million according to McCain. In any event, a bad idea. Not only would you legalize the 12 to 20 million, but they would sponsor their relatives thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification. The Heritage Foundation estimated at the time, 66 million more legal immigrants would join their relatives. Currently, Heritage estimates an amnesty would cost a net $6.3 trillion for just the 12 million.

I believe the Reagan amnesty was only intended for illegals who did not commit serious crimes and had "sufficient ties to American life".

They couldn't be felons, they could have up to three misdemeanors. There was no requirement that they had to have sufficient ties to American life, only that they had to be here for at least five years to be eligible to apply. They also had to learn English. You can use the link below to see the full text of the amnesty bill (Simpson-Mazzoli)

Simpson-Mazzoli Act

It was definitely a mistake along with the Immigration Act of 1965. When historians many years from now write about the rise and fall of America, they will point to those two pieces of legislation, especially the latter, as the reasons why America fell. Demography is destiny.

You don’t have to be brought here by your parents to qualify for DACA. You just have to get here by age 16.

They can respect laws and apply to become Citizens.

Lots of folks came from Eastern Europe for a three month vacay. They worked at menial jobs for cash. THEN. THEY. WENT. HOME.

There was a report that 70% of the illegals in Texas are on welfare, and at some point they took up 1/7th of the prison space in California (before Obama let 60,000+ of them go)

I deserve to not have cancer. My best friend deserved a job when he was out of a job for 6 years, many people “deserve” many things. But I’m not going to steal or defraud my doctor and my best friend didn’t cheat to get by. What part of HONEST and NOT CRIMINAL do they not understand. Yeah, yeah, yeah, their parents brought them here. So what. It’s still against the law and by God we Americans are tired of paying for it.
