My Mom came over often right after WBill Jr. was born. Ostensibly it was to see the baby, but usually it was with the excuse to "Help with the Laundry" or "Help with the dishes" or whatever.

Mrs WBill was a bit peevish about it, mostly because "Her mother-in-law knew more about her underwear" than I did. But otherwise, she was very grateful....and correctly so.

If my kid hated me because I'm a "Rethuglican", I'd likely be less forgiving than the Mom in your story. But, I'd also excoriate myself and wonder where I went so terribly wrong to have my child hate me for something as trivial as petty politics.

I'm glad that all my kids are conservative but I have liberal relatives. We avoid politics. It works for us and I'm really glad.

And you may think that you'd be less forgiving but if your kid was in pain and needed help you'd be there. I'm not certain the reverse would be true.
