Jefferson County District Court Judge Sandra McLaughlin reportedly mocked Darryl Broaddus, who is African-American, for wearing a Barack Obama T-shirt in her Kentucky courtroom last summer.
Broaddus was being arraigned in court over a drug charge when Judge McLaughlin made the bizarre remarks, according to the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting (video below).
Judge McLaughlin stated twice that the T-shirt of the President of the United States of America was “not helping” Broaddus' cause.
“He’s lucky to get out of here alive,” added Judge McLaughlin. “Did you see his t-shirt? Barack Obama, ‘Let’s Do It Again.’ That was a double whammy."
According to the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, Judge McLaughlin has a history of making odd remarks, and denied defendants the right to a public defender in four cases.
In response, Judge McLaughlin told the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting, "I think I do a really good job. I show up on time and I work hard. Everyone in my court is treated fairly and respectfully.”
According to RawStory.com, Judge McLaughlin is the lowest-rated judge in Jefferson County per a survey of lawyers by the Louisville Bar Association.
However, Judge McLaughlin claims her low rating is because the Louisville Bar Association is full of defense attorneys who “just declared war on a tough judge.”
Judge McLaughlin, who is up for reelection in November, falsely claimed that she was “unanimously endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police” on a campaign flyers, notes the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting.
Mike Hettich, of the Deputy Sheriff’s Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, said the organization endorsed Judge McLaughlin's opponent Matthew Eckert.
Anything you say or wear can and will be against you in a court of law.
Judge was right - lack, druggie, wearing an Obama shirt in front of a Judge was sufficiient to warrant caning.
That druggie should have dressed more appropriately and probably would have been seen differently.

If it happened last summer, why is only being brought out now? The resident in chief needs to have himself painted as a victim of a White racist judge. Personally I don’t care considering the crap dumped on White Conservatives by liberal judges and the media day in and day out, BFD.

Foolish and inappropriate. It seems like the judge was biased against this guy because the guy (presumably) likes Obama. That’s just not OK.

If you don’t want to appear guilty, then don’t act (and dress) like it.
It’s being brought up for the election. Notice in the same story they get into a dispute about her campaign flyers.
Were her remarks on the transcript?
IF she made them they are pretty clear, but she could have meant he shouldn’t have come in wearing a t shirt.
OK there is a video. Pretty funny. She did say the t shirt didn’t help but she really came down on him for “cruelty to animals”. She also said regarding the Obama t-shirt “He’s lucky to get out of here alive” (laughing).
No she shouldn’t say that but I loved it. I’ve seen so many judges make anti republican remarks in courtrooms.
She is entitled to her positions. It’s still a free country.
Too many people wince at open criticism of Obama, it’s because you will be labeled a racist. That’s BS. He has done and is doing a lousy job
