seriously

when that past-primetime blowhard dies the Navy should load his ashes onto a warhead and aim it into Russia

No, I'm saying the media would.

Let's watch how it plays out of the next few days. What is obvious to all vs. what the media portrays over time.

As an aside, our media hasn’t said much about the Muslims fighting on the Russian side . . . so you might have a point, there.

oh no, I think we should take advantage of this significant event by running around screaming Putin did it (without asking why), raise the DEFCON, and start another Cold War or worse

I'm thinking out loud possible plays.

If the media go all-in on Russia, then Obama gets pressured to respond to the 23 Americans who were on board. Obama waffles because he doesn't really care and he doesn't want the conflict with Putin. The media then has to choose between covering up for Obama's indifference or to keep pressing the Americans who were killed by Russia.

The alternative is to slow the coverage overall, and back-burner the story for Americans. Low information voters won't know at all anyway, and the rest of us will just increase our frustrations, but nothing will change. Filling the void, they go back to the border story because people are still blocking buses over here.

Remember KAL 007, and remember that Putin is KGB.

I’m not trying to defend Putin. He’s a bad guy. He worships Stalin. He’s former KGB, as you stated. He’s all about power and Soviet dominance. I get all of that.

Sometimes it's not even clear that a plane was intentionally downed by anyone. And sometimes as in this case, there are several different possible culprits. In the 1980s, for example, you'd have to establish if Assad or Qaddafi or one of several Palestinian factions or German or Japanese terrorists were responsible.

Wouldn’t you say that in most terrorist attacks in the last 20 years there’s pretty clear evidence as to who’s behind them? The media are never so quick to assign blame in those instances. In fact, they devote time and space to attempting to explain how it’s NOT Islamic terrorists.

That's a hypothesis that feels right. I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. My hunch is that a lot of people in the media want to blame White guys first. You saw that with some of the buzz about the Boston Marathon bombing. But proving that hypothesis to be true is something else. The people doing most of the speculating aren't necessarily the establishment media, but fringe bloggers. And the time line in each case can be hard to re-establish.

Consider that what we already know excludes Muslim terrorists and makes for a compelling case against the Russians.

Since the airliner was flying at cruising speed and altitude, it was far beyond the reach of simple to use manpads, the shoulder launched anti-aircraft missiles that Muslim terrorists have acquired and used successfully at times. Instead, the large and sophisticated Russian Buk missile system with high altitude reach has been identified as the culprit, a weapon that requires a trained crew. That means that either Russians or Ukrainians shot down the airliner.

Since the airliner was shot down over rebel held territory, the Ukrainian army must be excluded. Logically, that leaves Ukrainian separatists and Russian as responsible.

Notably, what we refer to as Ukrainian separatists includes Ukrainians, but they are primarily organized, led, and controlled by Russian army special forces, paramilitary, spies, and soldiers for hire. They have at the ready or can assemble or access crews with the training to operate Buk missile systems.

Independent observers reported that Russian crews drove mobile Buk systems with SA-20 missiles across the border to separatist held territory. Separatists are also known to have captured a Buk launcher loaded with SA-11 missiles when they took over a Ukrainian army base.

Notably, a Buk missile was apparently used a few days ago to shoot down a Ukrainian military transport. Social media postings by the separatists bragged of shooting down another Ukrainian transport, but those postings were deleted once it was realized that a foreign airliner had instead been downed.

At the very least, those who shot down the Malaysian airliner are Ukrainian separatist crews under the control of Russian special forces. Or, the crews may have been Russian, using a launcher and missiles provided by the Russian military.

Supposedly, US intelligence will be able to determine what type of missile was used and precisely where it was launched from. That will tell us whether a Russian supplied missile and crew was guilty, or if a missile captured from Ukrainian stocks was used.

That the Russians immediately grabbed the flight recorders indicates that they were closest to the events, closest to those responsible, and close to where the aircraft fell. Since this was near the Russian border, it may even be that the Russian military itself shot down the airliner down from Russian territory.

Russian technical involvement on the ground - if proved- still does not constitute evidence this act was state-sponsored, as was KAL-007

all this act does is to damage Russia
all the news is now about punishing Russia
Putin loses

This is all too convenient - for Putin’s opponents

thus my suspicions are up
the question is MOTIVE
and if there was none, then this was an accident of war, rebels aiming at what they thought was a military cargo plane ... or a very sophisticated false flag to discredit Putin

beware of US intelligence, totally politicized now, the same toads who assured us Assad’s forces were the ones using chemical weapons a year ago in Syria

Why are you so desperate to absolve the Russians from this?

Your concern for Putin's reputation is duly noted, even though he has allowed arms and soldiers to cross his border from Russia into Ukraine. Wondering if this particular weapon system was included is immaterial.

He armed them, he funded them, he allowed them to cross. Now some hothead shot down a civilian jet. He owns it.

why are you so desperate to close the case without knowing the facts?

I want to know the truth

as for charges this was state-sponsored terrorism by Russia-this one stinks. Way too obvious and convenient and no motive

What you refer to as “Russian technical involvement on the ground” means that the Russians provided and crewed the missile battery, selected the target, aimed, and fired. Russia has denied participation in the Ukrainian separatist rebellion. Claiming that they hit the airliner by accident would be an admission that they were both lying and engaging in acts of war against a neighboring country. Putin is a murderous thug. Discrediting him requires no invention, only the revelation of his criminality.
